so what's reasonable lifespan of a 3V 5.4L

o/k, I'm not expecting it to last like my old 300 I6, but is 200k miles too much to ask out of my 2004 5.4? So far I have 73k trouble free miles (on the engine anyway) but I know about my upcoming spark plug change and the headaches that may cause.

Other than that, have you heard of anyone with really high miles so far? I think the 04's are the first year they switched from the 2V to the 3V.

My truck runs like a champ so far, and with recently purchasing a new Escape for my wife, we just won't be able to swing two truck payments.

I'm a stickler for maintenance, fuel filters, air filters, oil changes, etc etc...and want this truck to last me quite a while.

Properly taken care of and not abused(don't confuse working a truck like abusing it, totally different), I wouldn't see why your truck couldn't see 200k.

If the ole ball and chains cavalier(horrid little thing, glad it's not longer around here) can make it to 250k without an overall, I think the 5.4 has the potential to atleast make it to 200k.

The 150 is actually my first ownership experience with the 5.4(well a gasser period), so only having 5k on it now I'm probably still in an optimistic mood, but I don't see why it couldn't barring anything unforeseen happening.

My opinion, ANY modern engine, if well maintained should have no problem going 250K. The afore mentioned Cavalier being a good example.

Just my .02. Take good care of it and it will take good care of you (is my motto and it holds true for the most part!)

The guy with the million mile van is up to 1.1 million on a 2 valve 5.4. I see no reason why the 3V would wear out any sooner (although some valve train parts might need a refresh down the road), so I think 250k would be a no brainer and 400-500k would be fairly easy as well, if you can still afford gasoline to run it that many miles into the future.

No worries except for plug changes,
George

Just listen out for engine noise. I have seen many failed roller rockers wipe out a cam lobe or worn chain guides get eaten by the chains getting aluminum shaving in the oil.

And what causes the worn chain guides; the aluminum?

I have a 01 F250 sd with the 5.4 auto and last week the truck topped 200,000 miles. Regular oil and filter changes with quality materials help alot.

Thinking of getting a 5.4 what is the spark plug problem you speak of?

I think they resolved the issue with the newer 5.4's but from my year (04) to about 07 there's a potential issue when you go to change the plugs that they get stuck and break off in the engine block. Apparently they're in there tight to begin with and get sort of "melted in" to the engine is how I would describe it.

From what I've heard it's a pain to change them, involves letting the plugs soak for a while in a lubricant then trying to take them out, and if they break Ford has designed a special tool just for this purpose to retrieve the broken parts of the plug. If the tool doesn't work, it can get VERY pricey for a mechanic to take apart the engine and get the broken plugs out.

I'll know soon enough.
