Axle shaft again!!!!!!

Started to hear a howl from r rear axle. I had replaced with a new one about 80k miles ago. I now need a new one and the advance bearing I used looks like it failed. I will now use a ford bearing as a replacement.

if it's a rear outside axle wheel bearing? check the housing for a plug/dam from old lumpy gear oil gone bad in the housing preventing lube to flow out to the WB.

suggest a synthetic 75w90 GL4 like Valvoline or Mobil 1. the 7.5"ers get hot.

check the axle shaft integral bearing race, may be rough...once the hard surfacing is gone, they wear crazy.

Called Made in China. I had some 9" failures (collars). If you try you can buy some made in Japan instead.

Can you get real Timken or SKF bearings anymore? Those were the reference standards for precision, but even they have manufacturing facilities in China. Does that mean their Chinese made bearings are inferior to those that they make in the USA or Sweden?

Advance Bearings is in Australia. I can't tell if they actually manufacture anything in China or anywhere; they seem to be a distributor, mostly of Japanese bearings and other parts.

Slightly related: The 1996 Cobra brake calipers made by PBR in Australia are still working fine on my Mustang after 12 years of use.

What about installation technique? A proper bearing driver will contact only the outermost edge when driving the bearing in place. Using a big socket or other improvised driver can often damage the bearing during installation. Just a thought.

If you can pull out the old bearing without completely destroying it, you can use it as a drift or mandrel to install the new bearing.

I've never had much success with impact installation; hitting something with a hammer to drive a bearing or seal in place is too imprecise and imparts too much shock to the part. It's best to use a press of some sort if you can get one in place.
