Worried about NJ Lift Laws
Hi, Im new to forum and been looking around for few days, Great forums!
...So I just bought a 99 F350 7.3 with an 8 inch lift and 38's. I have 2 weeks now to get this thing inspected and i am a little un-easy about going to the State for those "Tilt Tests".
Will i be OK if i just bring it to state? I have 38's so they stick out around 2-3 inches...that the main thing im worried about.
I would like to just go to a Shop and get it inspected...if anyone can let me know of a place around Northern Jersey besides the damb state inspections would be great.
Well...if anyone knows if i should just go to State or knows a good private guy please let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Hi pwrstroker,
I am too a little out of touch with the current lift laws, but the last time I went through, the 2 options were Lodi and Manahawkin. I went through Lodi andit wasn't too bad. I had a 87 F250 w/4" suspension & 3" body lift running 36" swampers and passed.
BTW, where are you in Morris County, I'm over in Mt.Olive.

I also found this link pretty accurate and looks to be recent. The only thing that doesn't seem to be listed is the inspection locations.

Depending how you define "north", there's a shop I have a great relationship with and they are fairly kind with inspections. They're in the 07067 zip code and typically charge about $80 plus tax for the service. If you decide to use them, pm or email me and if possible I'll go with you and introduce you. Both owners are good guys and generally do the inspections themselves.
There are state inspections in Lodi (most north off route 17 south), Rahway (near me, a little more south, and off route 1). Rahway can be lax or picky depending on the people you get. My crewcab failed, got the nasty red sticker, drove it through the next day "as is" without fixing a darn thing and it passed.
BTW, if that vehicle is registered as a commercial vehicle and within a "decided" weight range, you can do what's called "self inspection". Our chapter leader "TJC" knows a lot about this "quirk" as he does this with all his trucks. That may be an option for you if you are truly, truly worried.

NJF350SD - Thanks for the link, theres a ton of info. there! Im in Riverdale which is right next to Pompton Lakes, Wanaque, Wayne etc.
I just was Wheelin' yesterday in the truck for the first time...if you like to go off-road at all let me know.
Frederic - Ya i would appreciate that alot, 07067 is only around 45-50 min. from my house so thats not bad at all. I think the trucks weight is at 9,500 or so....i heard it needs to be 10,000.
That might be an option to just tell them it is 10,000 and i can do that 'self-inspection' thing, but the thing is im not sure if they would check up on the exact weight or not.
When i get home tonight i will send you a pm and maybe we can work out a time/day and i can meet you there if it works out for you. Thanks.

There is a guy in another forum in Jersey that has an insane truck and it passes. go to
Central Jersey Customs - Custom Truck and Car Alterations and Customizing and find Joe's number on the front page. Tell him I sent you, use screenname, he might remember that better. He might be able to help you out. He is in New Brunswick so I do not know if that is close to you or not.

Are you sure about it being limited to commercial? About 4-1/2 years ago when I went to inspect my 2000 F350 CC Dually (registered non-commercial) the inspection agent @Randolph told me I qualified for self inspect. I'm wondering if the knucklehead messed up or not. He gave me a similar sheet, but the truck is now sold for my '08, I can't check at this point.

technically, it is for commercial only.
but most cops do not know the law regarding the self inspecting loophole for pickups, so you will usually get away with it.
and what exactly is wrong with being old??
