52 ford marmon herrington needs help
i'm still trying to figure out how to get around in here, hope this works. i've got a 52 f3 marmon harrington that was taken apart when i bought it. i think i got everything except some kind of adapter for the rear axle hubs to go from 8 lug to the 5 lug bud. i was looking around on other threads and i think stu posted a pic of the vary adapter i'm missing. any help would be great. i was thinking about doing a bit of crazy custom stuff to it but someone posted pics of a yellow one that is about the coolest thing i have seen. might have to go back to stock, those grave digger tires are nasty. i also read about some m-h registry, i would like to talk to that guy if anyone can point me in the right direction. thanks

Wow, welcome to the family. You're right that I've posted a pic of one of the adapters a couple times for guys. I'll admit that I've got a third complete drive train that I hauled home from Virginia a few years ago, but really can't go parting it out because it would put me in the same spot you're in if I decide to convert another truck someday. I know that Chuck Mantiglia has spare parts from a '48 F-3 and from an early '53 F-250 that used those same rear adapters. But I can't say whether he still has the adapters. I assume you know of Chuck, but if not here's his link. Chucks Trucks LLC., Chuck's Trucks, Chucks Trucks
You're right that our Mark Mossell is putting together a M-H Registry. His user name is "thechassisman". Also, I've compiled a pretty complete list of the F-2/F-3's I've come across, and have shared that info with Mark. I'd appreciate having your VIN, M-H number, and front axle number if you don't mind.
I see that you are in South Dakota. There is a '51 F-3 in the Pioneer Museum in Murdo. I've stopped to see it and taken a bunch of pics of it. I hauled my V8 truck home from North Dakota, and our member Owen Peterson (1952henry) also has a '52 F-3 M-H from N.D. I've also swapped emails a fellow in MT that has a '51.
If Chuck doesn't have a spare set of rear spacers, there are companies that make adapters. One company that comes to mind is Arrowcraft. Here's their link. Welcome - Arrowcraft :: Helping You Handle the Road for over 30 years!. I'll give measurements, pics, etc. if it will help. Sorry, but I just can't let my spare set go. Please stay in touch. Stu

well i think that the M-h trucks are way cool and that you should deffinatley go back to stock with it. i have no ideal what the rear adapts look like but i wouldn't think they would be to complicated. you might be able to get dimensions and everything and just have a local machine shop make a set for you.

Below is what they look like. They are cast items, so it'd be a task to recreate them as original. Having CNC'd aluminum would be easier. The easiest is hopefully being able to get one of the sets off Chuck's '48 F-3 or '53 F-250.
An interesting factoid, in '53 MH used up their old 5 lug x 8" circle Timken 51524 front axles, combined with 5 lug rear adapters, before switching in late '53 to the Ford standard Timken A150 front axles having 6 lug x 7.25" bolt circle. The rears then got 6 lug adapters.
And you'll appeciate like I do these pics of Rod Kruithoff's trucks. The yellow is an F-2, the Glenmist green is an F-3. These are the only fully restored 3/4 tons I'm aware of. Stu

Nice to hear about another Marmon-Herrington Ford. I've got a 1953 F-250 Marmon Herrington that was built in September 1952, so it shares a lot of the drivetrain parts with the 1952 MH models. I will take a pic of the rear axle hub adapter when I get a chance. I think Stu wanted to see it anyway.

Well, Jed, maybe I got you stirred up for nothing. I've been swapping notes with Chuck about the adapters and hear that you've already talked to him. I understand why he wants to keep the '48 set intact. Same issue I've got with my spare set.
And I was wrong about the '53 set. Before Chuck bought that stuff I tried to buy it off ebay. It consisted of throw in pieces with a later F-250 MH a guy was trying to sell. I tried to get him to separate the pieces from the truck listing but got nowhere with him. Some time later I learned that Chuck had bought the stuff from the guy, and assumed he'd gotten it all. Not so. He'd only gotten the front axle. Here's the pics I've saved of the stuff from the original ebay listing. I now see that the rear axle doesn't even have the adapters like I first thought.
So, again, sorry I got you stirred up. If I can do drawings and/or detailed pics of mine I'll be happy to help. Stu

thanks for everything guys, its been sitting so long i feel like a idiot for stopping with it 9 years ago. should have keep going but it didnt fit into the family plan back then. my son is ready to get it out tommorow. and thanks for all the pics, i just downloaded them and with check with some local machine shops later. chuck told me to quit looking for the adapters cause the only way i will find them is if they are attached to a whole chassis. he was nice enough to offer his whole kit to me. i'm guessing it wouldnt have been cheap. bad thing about me getting excited about the m-h again is my wife is throwing around the s-word. SELL! had to tell her that was not in my vocabulary! THANKS again for the pics and links, and stu if you could get me some measurements that would be great. chuck said he could get the left handed studs for me. thanks again.... Mark
