Stupid, no but maybe a little silly.
Why would anyone want to date a flatty? Why don't you find yourself a nice girl with a good figure?
LOL, Bump!
PS Engine Piint colors is one of the most inconsistant things around. Some were green (supposedly starting in 52) some were gold (car engines) and most were red in our trucks. Just remember, it's 60 years old and could very well have been re engined or repainted in that time!
Ross will know about finding the year of manufacture on the engine! Or Bobby!

your looking in the right spot but sometimes they were not stamped very well and you can't find them, or they have been machined off, or maybe they only stamped part of the number????? I have seen a few with no numbers and some with only partial #'s visible.
here is a helpful site with this info.

Jules,
I appreciate the vote of confidence but I think you might be a bit confused, while I have had some experiences with dating older flatties, and a few that were well endowed I am not much use on figuring out the date of manufacture of old engines.
And as far as the coloring goes, the reds were always fun, and the golds were very nice as well, but since I'm not Captain Kirk I can't comment on the greens....lol

There are two sub-models of 8BA-type flatheads, that can be identified by the valve springs. Other than that, it really doesn't matter exactly what year the engine was made (and the valve spring types can be swapped as long as you swap all the pieces on the valve). The lower style is '51-up. See attached.

have you ever wondered how many times that thing has been changed or swapped out ????? i wouldnt concern myself as i , and i'm going to assume you also , arent gonna be competing in one of those uptight concours shows where everything has to be just so , or you lose ..... it's a flatty , it's fun , and it'll be a blast to drive . enjoy it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This thread reminds me when I took my '53 to the State Farm office to get insurance. The agent took pictures and noticed the odometer was on 85000 miles. He looked at me and said, Wow, thats really low mileage for this truck. I just shrugged and said, yea, I guess so.....Wow, kids these days!
