Oil pressure ?

Hello I have a 98 F150 4x4. Just picked it up 3 weeks ago and the truck has 283.000 miles on it. After I drive for a little while and the motor gets warm. I will pull up to a stop light the oil gague will bounce around and sometimes drop to 0 and the oil light will go on. I change the oil. since I do not know when the last time it was changed. Well that seemed to help. but it started again this week. Any ideals. just hope its not the oil pump.

the factory gague is an on- off switch. At 8 psi the gauge goes to 1/2 way, at 7 psi or less it drops to the bottom. you may have 5 psi, and it will read 0. The only way to get a good reading is to put a real gauge on it. You could change the sending unit and see if that helps, but you might actually have less than 8 psi. Slightly thicker oil can help build up pressure, but at 283 K, you probably getting some bearing clearance and pump wear both.
