85 CUCV 14 Bolt what is it worth
I am going to put a 14 bolt in the rear of my 73 F250. I found one for sale out of a CUCV, he doesn't know how many miles are on it. He said they are full float 4.56 with a Detroit locker. Now I really don't know what I'm looking for is there a tag or somthing that will verify that it came from a CUCV?.
So what is it worth if it is what he says it is.

Hard to say on the price, the u-pull-it yards around here only charge $100 for an axle any axle. There were a lot of CUCV's made for the military, so there are a lot out there. I wouldn't pay more than $500. But they are bullet proof and well worth more. There should be a tag to say the gears but I would pull the cover and inspect it before buying. A torn up 14b is worth its weight in steel, not much. You can count the teeth and see the locker (will not have spider gears.)

yeah the guy is asking 800 for it i thought that was a little high. CUCV are Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicles, the military has a bunch of the they come with 14b rears with 456 detroits and a dana 60 front, so i am trying to swap it all over to my truck make it 4 wheel disc and a hydro boost conversion. Anyone else want to chime in?

They're pretty much a dime a dozen. The fact that it came from a CUCV doesn't make it any different that one from a civilian truck. The detroit is the only thing that would up the value but keep in mind that 14 bolts are the cheapest and easiest diffs to add a detroit to since thay install in the stock carrier. Anyone can do it in the garage in a couple hours without having to re-setup the gears. Make sure that the 4.56's are what you want. There are two different carriers used in these axles, one for 4.11 and higher gears and one for lower gears. Therefore, if wanted to re gear it to match the front of your truck you may have to replace the carrier, depending on what you need to change it to. I wouldn't pay more than a couple hundred for it.

When I build a convert CUCV axle to disc brakes, I typically sell them for $850 bucks. That seems to be the going rate out here in California.
800 for a drum brake 14B is just a bit too much I think.
Detroits can be found for about 400 bucks, and 4.56's are another couple of hundred. The axle itself is a dime a dozen, so justify it any way you like, but consider an entire Military CUCV sells for about 1200 to 1500 bucks.
Chevy dana 60 fronts sell for about 850 to 1000 bucks typically.

73F350 you build them with disc brakes? Where in California are you?! would it be a bolt in affair on my 73?
Well I found a full floating for 300, junk yards are more expensive then I remember, or its Californian
Sorry I'm converting mine to a D60 from a ford, I was stating that cucv came with the 60, i should have been more clear. On that note I found a 04 super duty complete front end, he wants a grand for it, I'm still learning as i go so i don't know if this is the right year and front end for my truck.

The disc brake conversion is a simple bolt on that takes an afternoon. Her's mine. It's a D60 but it's about the same.
As for the '04 front axle, Chasetruck is right. Way too many mods needed. The framerails on your truck are closer together meaning different spring mounting, the hubs are metric and they really aren't as strong it a couple areas as the old ones. Not only that but '04 is a coil spring setup, isn't it? That's a whole different can of worms. Unless you really like worms.

The Superduty fronts are often reffered to as D50's. The diff is pretty much the same but everything from towards the ends is different. The best one to use is on from a 78/79 F350 and some F250's. It will bolt right into your truck and is a true D60 with kingpin knuckles instead of ball joints like the later ones. The problem is that since these were only used for 2 years they are hard to find, very desireable and expensive. However, they are out there, known as the holy grail of axles.
