Rear A/C evap--2000 Econoline Elkin Conversion

I own a 2000 Econoline 150 conversion van; Elkin conversion. The rear air conditioner needs a new evaporator. Local Ford dealer can't seem to find anyone who has the rear evap. I'm hoping we don't have to pull the part and send it around looking for a replacement because we'll have to go without a/c. Elkin is out of business. Does anyone have a thought to help us out? Thanks.

Is it factory installed? I have a 2002 Sherrod conversion that uses a Pro Aire rear set up. Maybe that will help you track something down.

Any reason you can't pull the trim panel and make a measurement and shop around for one that way?

What makes you think it is bad?

Rear Evap--local Ford dealer

Rear A/c didn't work. Local Ford Service pulled trim panel and told me the "blower" needed replacing. They said they called around and couldn't find a rear evap anywhere. They diagnosed it is the rear evap. Don't know if they measured it or just called around for one; though on would think they needed to identify it to call around.

If the rear evap is bad (has a hole) then the front a/c will not work either. On the vans I have seen the front and rear are tied together, ac or heat (except mini-vans which just tube the air).

I am sure if you take a picture and post dimensions (inlet size) we could find you one. Just I am not going to go through dozens of folders/sites unless I have the info. On most of these if you look on the part, you can see the original OEM number. It might even be A/C Delco.

Thanks. Here's what I found out from the dealer...almost no help. They couldn't find an OEM # on it. Taking it out leaves us w/o a/c and its getting hot. I guess I'll find another shop to pull it out so I can take a picture. I will get to it this hopefully tomorrow. Seems a shame to pay someone just to pull it out. But I certainly appreciate you don't want to engage in a wild goose chase. Thanks. I'll get back to you with a picture soon. BTW can I attach a picture through this website or do you have an off-site email I should send it to?

You do not have to pull it to look at it. It sits right behind a panel you can remove with a screw driver.

How about just a picture of it where it sits now? That way if I am at the junkyard I have a head start. I have no idea what the interior of your van looks like just to pull one out for the heck of it for numbers.

Yes, create a gallery on FTE and upload it here.

> The rear air conditioner needs a new evaporator

Exactly how did they determine this?

I doubt anyone that builds a custom van builds their own A/C system, it had to come from one of a handful of A/C OEMs.

I went through the same type of things with my 4x4 van, they used GM speedometer cable parts in my Ford because they were long enough.

Yes, that might be enough for a junkyard hunt Friday.

Um... before you go on a junkyard hunt....

Why not get a brand new one? They are widely available.

Whats more --- the tubing / piping is likely to be corroded if it came from an area with salt / corrosion.

Do both at same time and save yourself the cost of a redo.

Can't find a new one....

That seemed to be the issue for the ford dealer. They couldn't find a new one. They said they called all around. Where would I get a new one?

Thanks everyone.
I don't know if this helps further in suggesting any other sources for the part, but here are the #'s in case they were not readable from pictures.
