quick cold start check engine light

Started engine cold 35F immediately while wait to start light was on.

Check Engine light came on.

Check engine light still on after 500 miles. Truck runs great !

What did I break ??? How do I read engine codes?

How do I reset the check engine light?

Does the truck still set the light after you shut it down and start it again?

In order to read the codes you need a OBDII scanner, most say the auto parts store ones don't work real good on our trucks. That is assuming you have a 96 or 97.

I have had the glow plug light stay on before on my 02 but it never set off the CEL...If you know someone with a Superchip,Hypertech programmer or AE they can read the code and clear it for you.I am surprised it has not gone out after that mileage. It must have set a hard code.

It is a California truck built January 1997.

Check engine light comes on a few seconds after the ignition key is on whether the engine is running or not.

How much does a scanner cost ... one that will reset the check engine light?

I live in Los Angeles and most here want money to reset the code.

Many on here have a Auto Entegrity system that you load on your laptop. It will read all kinds of things on your truck.Clay(Riffraff) sells them.I do not know what they go for now.Surely there is a member near you that has a programmer or AE that will read the code and clear it for you.You may need to start a new thread asking the California crew if anyone is close.

Called a Diesel truck mechanic who I use for things like this .

He plugged it in and could not get any power.

Checked his Snap On and verified it worked on other vehicles.

Check the fuses and all fuses intact.

Check Engine Light on and no power to the chip plug in.

If there's no power to the OBDII port, you've got a blown fuse. Your cigarette lighter is likely dead too.

If you want to clear the code, just unhook both batteries for a few minutes.

Thank you !

Yep ... cigarette lighter does not work.

Where is the fuse ... since all the fuses in the engine compartment behind the air filter are all intact.
