Updating the factory GPS

Hello
The stealership quoted me $250 to update my GPS and I did an internet search and see I can order the DVD from Navteq themselves for $199. Has anyone updated their GPS and are there any other options?

Thanks
Joe

Try ebay, I've been seeing the 7p and 8p discs going for $100-$180 when they're up for auction.

I just checked and found a 3P and 4P on Ebay. What does the number and the P stand for?

The number is the edition i guess, not sure what the p stands for, maybe pioneer? 8p is the most recent update disc. Check what you have, in my 06 I have the 3p disc. In Serious need of a new one. The 3,4,6 discs are all over ebay, I've only seen the 7&8p updates a few times there, thats why I said WHEN they're up for auction lol. Yea I can't justify spending $200 on a frickin dvd so i'm keepin my eyes open.

Can the consumer update the DVD navigation in the Explorers or does it still require a trip to the dealership, or someone with the WDS system to enable the update?

As far as I know it's just a updated disc, you eject the old one and load the new one. Don't quote me on that since I haven't updated yet but I have ejected mine to see what version it was, and it won't work without the disc inserted. When you eject it the whole face slides down and out to reveal a slot towards the bottom
