Good point Julie,
I don't think a spare tire would fit in front of the fender sitting lower on the bed side. The running board area is too small. On F-250's and F-350 Express trucks the running boards are longer and perhaps the spare would fit in that area.
However, if my books say the side spare carrier was available on F-100's in 1954 then the indented fender had to part of that.

Yeah, there's not enough room on an F-100 for it to sit between the cab and fender I don't think. But I have seen the lower mounted spares sitting above the running board that didn't have the fender dent - you're right it had to have been a larger truck. I'll see if I can't find a picture of one. Also, it may have mounted outside the fender or cab. Remember, the bed side wall is not as deep in from the running board edge or outer fender edge on the F2/F250s (by 2 1/2 inches). I'm looking at the profile pic of mine and I just don't see how with only 8 more inches of space between the cab and fender that tire would fit in that space. I Just never "put two and two together" on is stuff before this came up.

Just as a follow up, here are pictures of a 54 with a bedside spare tire carrier. Note that it is an F-250. the spare tire carrier is mounted on the passenger side, and with the greater distance between the cab and fender, the fender notch was not required. So, this is an aftermarket or dealer installed carrier.
Does anyone have a picture of a stock nothced fender in an F1/F-100 that is pre 1956?

Yes, please post some. The thread is very interesting and your pics may give us some clear ideas too. Thanks!

the pictures he sent are HUGE. havent figured out how to re-size them(puter challenged). it took over an hour to d/load them. i still can't get pictures to load in my gallery deal. always get some kind of error. i am hoping my brother can bring the bed to me in a couple of weeks for our family reunion. maybe i can get them to work from my camera. the easier technology gets, the more difficult it becomes.....
