The wife broke my truck...
This is a strange one. I would start by checking for proper functioning of the throttle body. Make sure the throttle blade is there, and is not bent. Make sure it seats tight. I'm not sure how a fuel injected vehicle could possibly backfire, but thats what it sounds like. I also know to check the idle air control, but have never had to. Maybe someone else could help him out here?

One other thing to check is a small device called the idle air control valve. I had this problem on the Explorer about a month ago, and what would happen is that you would start the truck up, and it would sputter and die, unless you held the accelerator pedal in.
To sum it up, the truck wouldn't idle. This valve will become clogged, and will not operate correctly causing your truck to run oddly. Next time you have it in the shop, tell them to clean it out. Heck, you can clean it out yourself.
All you do is look for a small cylinder looking device close to the throttle body. You then take off the two mounting bolts, and disconnet the power cord, and shoot some intake cleaner through it, and voila. See if this helps anything.

I have had the same problem with my 94.
When starting the motor crank the starter for 2-3 seconds not until you think the motor has started. if it has not quite started it will backfire up through the intake and blow off the vacume lines.
I have noticed that the problem is more prevelent when I the MAFS needs cleaning. I usualy have to do this 2x a year as I put 25-30 k per year on my truck
One time I had this happen I had the vacume line come off the trans and it caused it to act like it needed a new trans. Turned out the line came off the diafram on the side of the trans.
Good Luck
