Thinking About Buy An Excursion Please educate me??

Well right now i have a 99 f-250 diesel and i love it. I tow a 2003 cobra to the track with it and it does very well combined weight with car and trailer maybe 8000lb. The problem is my truck is a standard cab and i have 2 kids and the wife. I want something that can tow my car to the track and get me good gas milage. So here are my questions. How many miles/ gallon can i get out of a v-10 (towing and not towing). How many miles can i get out of a v-10 before a rebuild? I wnted to buy and diesel excursion but they are hard to come by. Please help.

My V10 2WD 4.30 limited slip rear axle gets about 10-11 mpg not towing, about 8 mpg towing a 26 ft. travel trailer about 7000 lbs.

Excursions comes with a 44 gal. gas tank. You may get 400 miles on a full tank, although I've never tried it. It's easily over $100 at the pump.

I have the same set-up only in 4x4. Towing my 6,000 lb travel trailer, I get just over 8 mpg on average. I have seen 13 mpg on a couple of tanks of freeway driving during the summer not towing. In the winter, the best I saw last year was 10.6 mpg.

Last summer towing my 6500lbs TT we averaged 8.6 mpg's. Not towing 12mpg's hiway and 10mpg's around town.
The Ex is the ultimate vehicle for towing with a family, if the kids fight you got the 3rd row to stick one in.

I too am looking to purchase a 2005 Excursion. What are your impressions of the 5.4L 2V versus the 6.8L 2V? Also, did the 2004 and/or 2005 Excursions with the diesel engine come with the Torqshift transmission?

If you're going to be towing a trailer, I would go with the V10.

I second that opinion. MPG gain will be minimal with the 5.4 and if towing you will have a greater tow capcity with the 6.8

I've been cross-country with a wife, (2) boys and a dog in our Excursion and LOVE it. Currently looking to trade the 5ver on a TT so I can pull it with either truck.

My 7.3 diesel (actually vegetable oil) gets 17-20mpg empty - I haven't towed with X enough to know what mpg it gets. We avg about 3000 miles/tank of diesel....
