Best & Worst Engines Ever Made ?!?!
There's a lot of good ones and a lot of bombs out there too.
Some of my favorites:
Ford 351 , 370, 391.
International 549 (Gallon's to the mile, baby!).
Had some fun back in the day with:
Ch*vy 350 and M*par 318
I've got three trucks with 5.4 modular v8.
I'm happy with them, (great mileage), but they still need to prove themselves to me.
Diesels are great!!

I will probably never own another one becasue I like a little more power than it can provide but for reliability I know of no other engine that will outlast the 300I6. I would have to give the mopar 225 slant 6 a close second. As for the worst engine ever made I would have to hand that over to the 350 chevy diesel. The 460 of course would be the choice for pure grunt. I'll stick to one of the best all around engines though. The ford 390. This is for trucks anyway. Cars would be a whole different story....

I use to have a Chevy six cylinder in a '66' Biscayne.
They made the 235 & the 250.
No amount of punishment could take that engine down. This was back when I was in high school. I ran the thing so hot that spit would sizzle off the block. Happened a few times. It would use oil like it was free. Depending on how hard I drove it, it could use a quart of oil every 150 miles. I never changed it, just keep adding to it. It had a three on the tree and I would rev it till I thought it would blow. It had such low compression that the engine compression wouldn't hold it from rolling down a slight incline when in first gear after shutting it off. I wanted a good reason to drop a small V8 in the engine bay. After I couldn't destroy the engine I gave up and decided to rebuild it. Soon after making plans I crashed the car and totaled it. Say what you want about Chevy's, but that six cylinder gave me reason to respect it. I use to work at a boat dealership at the same time. All of the Merc-Crusiers stern drives had Chevy six cylinders attached to them and the Merc-Cursiers had a good reputation. And I have to ask, what was the reason for the "slant" six? Was it slanted to get it to fit under the hood?

i would have to agree w/ratsmoker the slant six was a bad motor scooter.i watched them as a kid win a lot of races on short tracks.best? i would say the 302,so durable.the worst? dont know the engine size or anything but i would say the corvair motor, blew oil all over.i am sure there are other examples for best and worst but these two came to mind.

I have to agree on the 300. I take my '80 F150 to the mud bogs with 200,000 miles, oil all over the engine compartment, everything still stock other than lift and tires, and everyone laughs at me. They don't laugh after I beat some and stay close to the big blocks. I can rev that thing up, drop the clutch, and it never complains. Makes guys with smallblock 400's mad when I beat 'em. Throws the power steering belt a lot , but that 300 is amazing as far as how much punishment it takes.
The 305 is a dog, so is the old smallblock chevy diesel. The 305 gets the same gas mileage, if not worse than a 350, way less power, and all crammed into that ugly chevrolet packaging.

I'm a little partial because I have a 300, but my only complaint is horsepower and the ricer sound, it needs more power (or just a turbo). But after 171,000 miles it still runs like it's new. I've never owned another vehicle but for pure ***** to the wall power I'd say the 520 CID Ford they got now is pretty bad looking, that must be why they have so many ford monster trucks...

i beleive that the 5.7 liter diesel chevy had in the early 80's was probably the biggest boat anchor of them all. What were they thinking trying use a 350 for the basis of a diesel. My favorite engine would probably be either a 429 Boss or the 427 SOCH. Those engines could take abusive rpm, its to bad ford didn't produce them in any quantity.

as much as i hate to, ya gotta give credit where credit is due. the bbc engine isnt a bad engine. that is what you find most commonly in marine engines and they are ussually ran pretty hard. but id have to say that the 300-6 is prolly the best fer durability and reliability. fords 460's are good engines also cept fer the fuellies. even my lil old 5.4 would run circles around our old 94' 1 ton. i think that the 2.9 v6 is a pretty spirited lil engine too! my uncle hauled the big round hay bales on a 4x4 ranger and ran the heck out of that thing! i couldnt tell you how many times that lil truck floated them por lil valves!
