RearEnd Question On 95 F150
To All You Gearheads. Have A 95 F150 With A 5.0. Right now it has the stock 3:31 Gears. Im looking for something that wont bog the engine down on the interstate. right now at 70mph & I encounter the slightest hill it has toi downshift out of OD. Any suggestions on what gears would be better? Also with this 4r70w how does having a different rear end affect the shifts points & will it have any adverse affects on the transmission?
Thx

Lower gears (numerically higher) will cause less stress on the transmission actually. Your speedometer will be incorrect with a gear change but that can be fixed.
I'm gonna say go with some 3.73's, I don't think you'll notice a big enough difference swapping to the factory 3.55 gears that were offered.. Are you running stock tire size?

Yes you have to change both front and rear ratios or 4x4 with go bang.
Maybe add power in other places so you won't have to give it as much throttle to get up a hill, which in turn won't make the trans kick down because it goes off the TPS.
Talking about headers, exhaust, intake, chip ...etc. Just throwing around ideas. I've been in your position with the gear swap. Its $$$ and alot of work to do both axles.

I'm kinda new to Ford stuff but w/ my 1 ton Jeep I've learned that gearing will make the biggest noticable change. I have 5.86s w/ 40" tires, it weighs probably close to 5000lbs and I can spin the tires easily on pavement w/ a detroit in it w/ the stock 4.0. It feels way better than 33s w/ 3.73 gears.
Here is a really good gear calculator:
Gear Ratio Calculator
If anyone w/ a 2wd truck is looking at that, just pick any t-case... obviously ignore what the low range ratio is, just the 1:1 ratio(as if you had no t-case at all... which you don't).
I don't know if/which of the Ford auto transmissions have a lockup torque converter, but if so you'll be turning a hair under 2000rpms at 65mph w/ 3.73s w/ stock 235/75/15 tires. If not it will probably just be a bit higher than that. Should be fine
FWIW the 89 w/ 302/AOD I just bought has what I think is a tiny whine coming from the pinion bearings in the rear... I'm thinking about regearing it to 4.10, I'll be turning just under 2100rpms at 65mph.
If you've ever ridden in/driven anything with even mild power but is geared deeply the difference is night and day between stock gears.
