Question what is best on a 5.4 f150

a turbo, supercharger, or a camshaft change for a truck that is daily driven 70 miles 5 days a week. may tow now and again but wants more bottom end (i know that turbos are mostly top end but they make great tq) or maybe something i did not think about

2007 f150 crew cab cold air intake, edelbrock sdt cat back, edge evolution programer

A trin screw type supercharger like a Roush or Saleen will give the best results.

After the cost of the turbo and installation the turbo is free horsepower, all roots type superchargers cost to operate as they create a lot of drag. A properly installed turbo will not be noticed until you ask for more power and then it whistles at you a little. Also, turbos are known to provide much better fuel economy as long as you drive sane, not like me.

I don't have a turbo on my Navigator yet but I have 4 or 5 turbos of different sizes and one will end up on my truck and if it's not enough there's always spray. I've had turboed bikes and built a turbo Mustang in the past and it is not that hard. The fuel economy makes it a worthwhile mod in addition to the power available.

The Mustang I did was a '67 with a 427 low riser and 1 4bbl Holley. This was about 1972 and we modified the headers to front exit with a crossover pipe/collector and made a flange to mount the turbo onto. We then made a box to enclose the carb and basically ran something like a dryer exhaust/vent hose to the box and initially just made a pipe to dump the exhaust in front of the front wheel. Naturally that original "rig" had to be reworked several times before we got it neat appearing and really functional. The dryer type hose was the first to go, the box worked well, the exhaust dump was neat as when we really got on it the exhaust was still fire and lit up the road. Scared the hell out of a lot of people, all in good fun. The exhaust was surprizingly mellow as the turbo dampened the exhaust pulses. We also ran a water injection system to control spark knock as the engine had abour 10 or 10.5 compression. We also used a dual acting advance/retard diaphram on the distributor which helped a lot. The diaphram idea came from what is used on the turbo Corvairs. You have to remember this was done when very little was known about turbocharging and every thing was somewhat crude and experimental and on a TIGHT BUDGET. It worked and in a little while it was damn near unbeatable as a street racer in it's day.

did you ever dyno it, on motor alone it should scream. was it a big block car from the factory and how much boost do you figure you were pushing. i cant wait to fire this motor its got a fairly agressive cam for a hydro flat lifter, should chop good at idle. i love that sound as much as hearing a turbo at full boost. my srt4 ran 20psi boost and people did not understand why they just lost to what looked like a neon but had over 230hp and 250tq at the tires in a little car. my stang is going to need more power than that to rip like i want. my great uncle had my dream a 1968 shelby gt500kr fastback but sold it in the 70s what a nice car!!

We guesstimated it at over 750 hp pushing about 18lbs in what was originally a 390 GT Muatang. Back in the '70s and early '80s I had as many as 14 Shelbys at one time and all except 1 was 428 or 427 powered and in various condition from ratty to pretty damn fine. Only 1 was a GT 350. I sure wish I had a couple of them now.

I agree that properly sized turbo will work the best. Size it properly and it won't have much lag.

Turbos can't be beaten for their torque characteristics and towing performance.

I had several KRs and 1 was my DD. It was powered by a 427 side oiler with a 428 crank, Hyd. cam, Tunnel port heads with a pair of 780 cfm Holleys going through the original C 6 trans. to a 350 Detriot Locker. It was the most fun car I have ever owned and I have owned a lot of great cars.
The '68 KRs had the best chassis for petrformance mods due to the built in torque boxes, reinforced shock/spring towers and other mods from the factory.
