painting chrome?

anyone ever try to paint chrome? ive got some chrome items on my new truck i would like to paint black, nerf bars, exhaust tips

It's not that easy, and I've never had good luck. However, prep is the key. The chrome needs to be scuffed pretty good to give the paint something to adhere to. The paint/body forum may have more/better info on exactly what works best to do this.

Id suggest wet sanding with 2000 grit. then using a self etching primer. Just dont expect it to last forever.

i talked to the dealer about the same thing and they said that they could do it but no matter how good the prep is the paint will flake eventually.

you could always grind all the chrome off with an air grinder and a 36 grit or 50 grit roloc then switch to scotch brite rolocs to smooth out the grain. Then switch to sandpaper and so on. I have tried media blasting chrome off and it doesnt work very well either.

i would go to pick a part and practace on some part before trying it out on your new truck

Also use some Adhesion Promoter, it'll help make primer/paint stick to the chrome. The key is in the prep work though.
