Unhappy What are the first signs of a Tranny going out?

My '88 was driven 2-3 hours today and after about 45 minutes, it started driving funny. When I would shift into overdrive, it would start acting up. Strange noises that have never been present before today. At a stop sign, I would really have to give it gas to move it, and I just about forgot about doing anything over 65mph. I know this is kinda general information, but I don't know much about vehicles yet. Thanks to this sight, I am learning lots though! Thanks in advance guys!

Oh, not sure if this will matter, but it's a 5-speed inline 6 that needs an oil change. I am 3 hours from home and have no place to do it up here. It's spring break, and I just want to get home from college and get some work done!

First thing i would check is your tranny fluid level. You do this on a flat surface while the truck is running

When you had to give it a lot of gas to get it moving. Did the engine bog down or did it seem to rev up even though the truck wasn't moving much.

Maybe I didn't see it, but what tranny do you have?

I'm not sure the tranny. It's a stock 5 speed with the 300 I6. That's all I know about it. It seemed that the engine bogged down and I had to give it more gas so it would then rev it up. I'll be checking the transmission fluid tomorrow morning. I really want to drive it home and be done with it until I can put some time in it. I hope I don't come across as an idiot, but I just was never grown up spending time on vehicles. Thanks for all the advice that you two have given and all that i hopefully is coming.

I apologize. I forgot to mention in my first post that it is a 5 speed.

Did other gears have a problem or just OD? Could you describe the sounds at all?

You say that it would bog, then you would give it more gas and it would rev up. When it revved up did the truck accel at the same rate or did the truck lag behind?

skyfox, I'll drive it tomorrow. To be honest, I was stressing out so much, that I didn't much pay attention to it. It seemed to bog in 1st and it kind of lagged in 2nd. 3rd and 4th seemed to be as chipper as usual...if I remember right.
