429 SCJ heads and intake

Hey guys, I know these threads can be annoying but I'm just trying to get some ideas. I've got a set of 429 SCJ heads that have just been gone through along with the factory intake. I'm about to start a 557 build and these heads just arent going to cut the mustard. With that said, I will likely be selling them for a head that will achieve my goals. I've been searching the net trying to figure out about what these heads/intake are worth. Any input would be appreciated.

it really depends on what you have done to them and what parts you have in them.

i have seen them go as low as $400 - 500 for a set of rebuildable cores, up to $1500 for a set that has been professionaly rebuilt using quality parts (valves, springs, retainers, etc)

they are still of value to the mud pullers that require iron heads to run in their class.

check out some mud puller sites and the sites that cater to the 460 for an estimate of price and desireability.

Like Mike said, it all depends on the condition of the heads and what all has been done.

Do you have any hp goals for the new motor? Is it going to be a street build or full out race motor? What's your budget like? Speed and hp isn't cheap, so plan to spend some money. I'll shoot you a PM with some info that may be useful to you when you start your build.

This motor will be going in an older Ford pickup. Its a 2wd that will see very limited street use. With that said, the motor doesnt need much for street manners. Power goals are 900-1000hp. Dont wanna shoot for the moon! I'm not overly concerned with the cost, I've done several high hp projects in the past so I've got a feel for it. Plus, I've got a good start on the parts already and just aquired the heads I'll be using along with most of the parts for the build. I'm pretty much down to finding a good block. I also need to decide what transmission I'll be using. I've got bellhousings for a couple different ones.

Just remember for your trans, that nothing shifts faster in the 1/4 than an auto. As for the old iron SCJ heads, not sure if they will cut the mustard in a 900-1000hp goal without the use of some power adder.

^^^Oh no, the SCJ's wont be going on this. I picked up a set of A460's. The iron SCJ's would be perfect for a 500-600hp build but wont touch this. As of now, trans choices are Powerglide, Th400, or C6. I'll be doing a little research as well as getting the truck on the scales before deciding which route to take.

A460's would have no problem. Have you changed out to an aftermarket block yet? While there are plenty of guys making them work, you need to keep on top of the tune to keep them surviving.

A powerglide is fast, but there are plenty of huge hp guys that run c6's. Look up Frank Merkl on those sites I sent you and talk with him about needed mods to make a c6 bulletproof.

with a 1000hp goal make sure you don't cheap out on the crank. Go with a forged unit. and if you truly think you want 1000hp I personally would spend the money on a set of Oliver bllet rods too although my eagle Hbeams are still living at 900+ so they are ok but if I was building that engine again i would run the better rods.

The plans were for a factory block thats partially filled.
A billet crank and rods are already here along with a set of Diamond pistons.

Honestly if you have spent the money on billet crank and rods I can't see why you would chance your investment on a factory block. A460 or IDT ultra blocks aren't that expensive of insurance.

Yep. There are plenty of people running stock blocks making serious horsepower, but ask any of them and they know (or should know) that they are livving on borrowed time with a stock block.
