Trans/motor questions

Okay, sorry, first time in this forum, but I have a question for any and all of the engine swap gurus. My Brother in law owns a 98 F-150, his motor done. So, what motors can I put in front of his transmission, and what can we expect in wiring differences if we swap it with a bigger motor. His present motor is the 4.7 SOHC. Thank you in advance.

Just some comment for you to think about.
The 97 motor has two coil packs for ignition.
The 5.4 and later 4.6 engines have coil over plug ignitions.
This means the harness and PCMs are different between the two systems in use, per the year and motor size.
So you have to decide if the hassle of change-over is worth the effort to work it all out or get all you need from a donor truck.
The 5.4 will have more pulling power but is not a big change that is worth the effort for the gain.
Easier to put a new 4.6 in and change the rear gearing, reprogram the transmission for more firm shifting, for the same outcome and not have any back yard engineering hassles.
Good luck.
