Is that factory?
I heard something about Ford trying to put a diesel in the smaller trucks...
Sorry we are talking about diesels, speaking of which, No wonder our Diesel is hard to start...

Yea it is, Ford only made them 5 years total, 83-84 with a 2.2L perkins diesel and 85-87 with a 2.3L Mitsubishi turbo diesel.

Those Cummins BT4s are 4 Cylinders, and are pretty good little engines.

Yea i'm pretty certain, at least as far as the Rangers are concerned, what Ford did or didn't do with a Cummins with other trucks or in the foreign market i'm not sure.

yuppers. they are a cummins BT6 with two cylinders missing. thats the actual description on cummins' web site. they are capable of a ton of power too.

Thanks for all the advice and information so far. I changed the setting on the 4bbl and seem to be getting a little better mileage but its still pretty much 100 miles to a full tank at the most. Which of course is not that much at all. I would be happy getting at least 8-10 mpg. Now I am wondering if I should change the gear ratio. The problem is that I have no idea what the guy before me did or didn't do to the engine.
Any other ideas of how to increase the gas mileage?

stop using 91 octane. use regular and see what happens. if nothin, itll lower your fuel costs for a tank.

go to the hardware store, and buy 100% pure acetone. add about 2.5 ounces per every ten gallons of gas when you fill up. havin a 19 gallon tank, youll want to use about 5 oz. be sure to put it in before you fill up. dont add any extra acetone or WILL see your mileage drop. unless youre basically tryin to come up with race gas that is...

Having spent some time working in a smog shop, there is not an issue running higher octane fuel. In fact, it will burn cleaner. Something to keep in mind if you live in a state like CA where they have to be smog checked. If the environmentalists could get away with it they would legislate older vehicles off the road. Anything that will keep those loons at bay is good by me!

the higher octane burns cleaner because it burns hotter and faster, and it WILL provide a little more power, but it will also result in a loss in fuel mileage. i know thats backwards thinkin, and thats what i used to believe too, until my mileage dropped from 16 to 14 in my old explorer, drivin the same roads, the same way, in the same weather.

This thread is messed up, I need to figure out how to unsubscribe to I never have to see it again.
Higher octain fuel burns slower not faster. Fact.
OP, do you even know what your gas mileage is? You are making all of us guess how much gas is left in your tank when you fill up, impossible.
Reminds me of a friend of mine who thought his 2000 Ranger got worse gas mileage than his silverado because he could drive around longer on a half tank with the silverado than the ranger. Nevermind the fact that a half tank on the Chevy was twice as much gas as a half tank on a little ranger.

Never experienced that myself in my dent. In my daily driver SD 91 and 93 octane tunes improve mpg and power.

Cold weather, oxygenated fuel, idling, short trips and etc all kill mpg.

The ONLY thing high octane fuel does is increase the fuels resistance to detonation, pre-ignition, knocking, pinging or whatever you choose to call it, nothing more nothing less, it does NOT give your engine more power, better mileage or make it run cleaner, anyone claiming otherwise is living in dream land.
