88 EFI econoline dual tank issue

i have two fuel tanks.

when i switch to front tank with dash mounted switch, my fuel guage reads correct, and the engine pulls gas from that tank,

when i switch to rear tank my guage drops to E (even though the tank is full) and wont pull gas from it,

tested it out on the highway, drove with tank selector selected to rear tank, with guage at zero thinking maybe just the guage or fuel level sender wasn't working, however engine still pulled from front tank,,

any ideas anybody?

E 150 fuel tanks

I have an 87 with the 5.o, I have the same issue with the fuel gage. works on the front but not on the rear. but mine pulls fuel from both tanks fine, all of the time. I can even hear the fuel pump running in the rear tank when it gets empty. Try running the rear tank to empty and see if you can hear the pump. Like in the driveway. I always thought it was just the rear sending unit. Jim

alvaroguillen,
Sounds like you have a bad pump in the rear tank or a bad selector switch on the dash.
Also your float may have sunk.

Grogan14,
Maybe a bad float or sender in the rear tank.

i,ll check all those starting with the switch, power going to it and out of it-it works like it is always on front tank.

when i got the van the dash lights were out, the radio was installed wrong, the horns/cruise control didn't work, and there were a lot of blown bulbs and fuses on the fuse panel, so if a switch can be ruined by faulty electrical stuff...

so far I fixed the dash lights and radio install, - replaced blown fuse on fuse panel for horn, but still no horn/cruise, so maybe theres another fuse somewhere..

poor ground perhaps making the pump not run and gauge not read, that being said when my gauge went wacky it would read fuller than full in my F350

two fuel tanks

This is a little off subject, but maybe someone can help.I have a 2002 E-350 with a Quigley conversion. When the conversion is done to 4x4,the gas tank is shortened to make room for the transfer case. This results in a 25 gal gas tank. Not the greatest for highway driving.I have looked into aftermarket systems for a 2nd tank, but the cost is way above $1000.On the 1988 model, where are the 2 tanks located? Can the aft rear axle tank be retro fitted to a 95 /newer van?I dont mind relocating the spare to accomplish this.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, rick

Thanks for the advice, and the diagram

i used it to narrow down the possible problems, found out someone had cut the wires coming from the pump and tried to solder a bulb socket onto it???

and used the wires going to the pump as a trailer lights hookup? weird.looked like someone on crack tried to wire up a trailer.

also the wires coming from the tank/pump were 1 orange and three black? different from any diagram i could find. one was a smaller gauge than the others so guessing thats for the fuel guage sender was easy, the three blacks i had to use a volt meter to find the power and the two grounds,

when i hooked it all up the pump started makeing some bad sounds, and now makes a steady whine, so i assume its going to be dead soon, but it works for now!
