I just recently had a transmission go out in my 1997 F-150 v6 automatic. It was actually purchased in late 1996 and I kind of recall there being an issue where the first year they used the same transmission on the v6 and the v8 then later(98 or 99 maybe?) they started using a different transmission on the v6. I THINK I have a E4OD in my truck but when I call places looking for a replacement they all tell me that it shouldn't be.

Anyone have any idea how I can determine what transmission is actually in my vehicle?

The only automatic transmission Ford installed in the '97 V6 F150 was the 4R70W.

 

Any idea if it was the same transmission for 98? And what transmission was on the v8? Thank you very much

 

Yes, it was the same for '98.

As for the V8 the 4.6L also used the 4R70W. The 5.4L could have either the 4R70W or the 4R100.

If you are thinking of getting a V8 trans, don't do that. The bolt pattern is different and it will not bolt to a V6 engine.

 

97 and 98s can also have the E4OD since the 4R100 didn't come into use until 99 MY.
