Good or bad idea - underside oil spraying....

So i found one of these neat little air spraying majobbers, and it has a fluid suction thinger on it.

I thought about taking some used motor oil, and spraying the underside of the truck to fight against rus, and maybe even let giant frozen chunks of road crap fall off easier.

Then, I started thinking, the oil might cause dust to build up and cake on everything...including moving parts...

Do we think the extra dust is bad enough to offset any anti-rust benefit of the oil?

I've been 'rustproofing' my truck with boiled linseed oil. Happened to have a couple gallons of it. Works good and it cures fairly tack free. Hoping to get alittle more life out of my oil pan/dipstick with it.

I've heard of others using waste oil and/or kerosene....seems like a big mess to me.

When I lived in Vermont, I ALWAYS oil undercoated my vehicles, my parents vehicles and my siblings vehicles. Bar and chain lube mixed into motor oil. Spray it on everything under there. Start the truck and let it warm up and get that oil off the exhaust. When it warms up, drive it down a dry, dusty dirt road. Come spring time, wash it all off.

I've been undercoating my vehicles with used motor oil for the past 20 years. Definitely worth doing if you live in a "rusty" environment.

I've been gettting a similar result with the boiled linseed oil. I'm sure the WD-40 is much cheaper....I just happen to have a few gallons of boiled linseed oil

I've done the W-40 on important bushings and connections and such but never used an oil as a spray rust inhibitor. My next step is the POR15 or rust bullet, exspecially for the oil pan, don't need any of those headaches later on.

The nicest international scout i ever saw, is owned by a guy that worked at the railroad, and everyday they sprayed the underside of it with used motor oil PITA to work on the truck, but I never saw one that rust free before. Ever.

Oh man, you guys gotta try Fluid Film for this application. Fluid Film will give you MUCH better protection and performance than the other products mentioned.

Fluid Film never dries out or gets gummy or tacky. It actually embeds into the pores of the metal where it remains active, migrating to all the inaccessible areas. Fluid Film will stop and prevent corrosion caused by road salts (including calcium chloride), and it resists water wash off.

It is also classified as non-toxic and non-hazardous, and is much friendlier to the environment.

As a sponsor on this site, we are so confident you will be impressed with the superior quality of this product that we will ship out sample cans for free for members who haven't tried it and live in the US. Just PM me your contact info. If you've already tried a can and aren't blown away yet by its performance, then you haven't taken the time to notice how long it is lasting. It lasts a looong time.

I actually learned it from riding dirt bikes....Keeps all the dust and mud and crap from sticking to the bike. Works great on the truck too. But Dano...PM sent would love to give it a try. Thanks!

Parkland, would you rather have dust or rust? I think it would be worth it.

Can't say no to that offer. Last winter was rough on my truck. The oil pan has a quarter sized rust spot .

Thanks for the sample Dano!
