steering problem with F350 4X4

hopefully someone remembers the post back in march of 2009 by EV or Brent the photographer from california, who had a ford excursion that had the exact problem i am having with my pickup. back and forth , back and forth. the steering is so eratic. attimes.... if you read his post back then in steering problems , i beleive it was in the excursion section but hit the nail on the head. the wheel goes back and forth. every few seconds. anyone who can help? want to leave for a long trip very soon and am afraid to leave without fixing it

don't remember that post, but you could always take it to a good truck alignment shop(not the stealership) and they could diagnose your problem quite easily.

My 2003 F250 4X4 wandered all over the road after getting new tires at 64K. Had a full alignment and that solved much of the wandering problem. However, I still seemed to have to constantly correct going down the road but it was better.

Then I checked the steering damper and it looked wet. I replaced it with a Monroe steering damper. The original Ford steering damper was completely shot and was a dinky device compared to the new Monroe. Cost of the Monroe steering damper runs between $28 online and the $41 I paid at the local parts store.

It is an easy replacement. You will need an 18MM socket and a 15MM combination wrench. I put the damper on and lightly tightened the nuts. Then I turned the wheels left and right and drove around the block. Now that the damper was seated properly on the bolts, I tightened it down.

Steering is now working properly.
