Yes, the entire carrier assembly (pumpkin) removes easily once the axles are pulled. That's the beauty of a Ford 9". Most any serious racer will have complete assemblies on the shelf in different gear ratios for different tracks. John broke a pinion retainer bolt. He was SIMPLY CLEANING his diff. It is the first recorded incident of anyone breaking the mighty Ford 9 without actually starting the engine! The same one I looked at a mere two weeks ago in the shed. Just patiently waiting to be installed. He's had 11 years to clean and install it and now look where we are today.

In any case, the gears will not be harmed until you actually drive the truck. Fix the bolt and lets get back to work J. This is not a tragedy.

RE: easy outs, there are many different kinds. For a truly siezed bolt, most of them suck, Just my opinion If a bolt is free but it snaps due to overtorque, then they somethings work fine. So does a left hand drill bit.

4spd, my bad, I believe John actually has socks older then Nathan (51 Dueller). But I think Nathan was driving and you only had your permit then so ..............

my quest today...

1. try to find a supplier (that's open) with left hand drill bits...
2. ****** the pinion carrier/support/hickeything out
3. drill out the DEFECTIVE bolt (it wasn't the cleaning that did it DeWayne)
4. finish the project and get some primer on it.
5. inventory socks.

john

BTW Wayne... thanks for the nice e-x-p-l-o-d-e-d view of the rearend...cool

Did I miss something in the OP? Are we fixing something or just cleaning and overtorqued a bolt? In any event, just trying to lighten you up buddy. You've been through problems that make this look like an air filter change.

You got it.
Pull the carrier and remove the bolt.
But first take a pick or awl and try to turn ther bolt out without removing anything. If you can catch a burr on the broken part of the bolt it should back right out. If the threads were clean the bolt will not be tight in the threads.

short and sweet

removed the carrier and used a small chisel to turn it out... my main concern was screwing up something or watching parts roll across the floor by removing the carrier and you guys took care of that concern...

now.... what is the torque on these bolts SUPPOSED to be instead of 1/4 # too much

thanks all

john

................never mind.....

quick search of Strange's site and viola...

now back to our cleaning program already in progress...

You are really starting to move on this thing. How close are you to a rolling chassis now?

finish painting the rest of the pieces/parts...

press in the bushing for the front control arms

install the pumpkin in the rear end

then figure out how to un-install the frame from rotisserie without damage and with no help... (thinking small block/tackles from the ceiling... lift it up and roll the rotisserie out)

set the frame up on padded jackstands and start adding parts... I could do it in two good days, but I ain't had a good day in years

need to start prodding my engine guy again soon and start the engine build back up... oops... more painting...

won't be long D

got a trip to disneyworld next friday- wednesday so all progress halts for a close encounter with the mouse...

next question... what is the best way to clean a C-6 for paint ??? it's reasonably clean but not clean enough... I'm gonna pressure wash it first and see what that does... someone mentioned aluminum etch solution... but I"m not that familiar with that

any suggestions ???

later
John

Little degreaser, let it sit a while, pressure wash

Get the stubborn stuff with brake kleen and a small brush. Stay away from open flames with the aerosol mist. You catch the we almost died thread from huffing brakleen thread? Anyway, it works great, just do it outside.

John, to bad about the bolt but you did get it out. Better yet you started a informative thread for me and thanks to all that contributed. I am about to try and re-build my first third member should be interesting.
