Problems with my DP tuner

Well i just put my Dp tuner in a couple of hours ago, when i took it for a test drive, it started up fine but then after like 3 minutes of driving, the whole truck would die, then would start after like 10 minutes, then die after another 3, start after another 10, well you get the pattern, what could be up?

Check for loose connections on the PCM and DP controller. The 10min dead and 3min running is kinda weird. When you installed the tuner, did you make sure the connections on the PCM were good and clean?

If there is an intermitten connection the contacts still has some silicone on the traces or in between them causing the sporadic starts and no starts.

I would double check the cables also to make sure they are installed per the instructions. My guess would be on the first though.

Yeah if they weren't clean then would I have problems with the old chip. The old chip worked fine, now this happens with the new one.

Don't pay too much attention to the time issue. I've had an electrical problem before that I was sure was heat related and the only way to get the truck started was to raise the hood and wait for 20 minutes. I was able to verify it took 20 minutes with the hood up several different times.

Turns out it didn't have anything to do with the hood up, heat or the time. It was a stupid short. The switch or chip itself are the likely suspects as already mentioned.

Wiggle the DP switch or the wire going to the back of it while idling in the driveway. See if that makes the truck stall.

Diane, can he wiggle the chip a bit with the truck running, or does that risk damaging the PCM? I know you don't want to unplug the chip with the key in, I just don't know if the wiggle test would be a no no for the same reason.

NO Please don't do this...it will fry the chip and the PCM.

Yes check everything and back track. If there is something going on with the switch we will send you a new one pronto.

I just talked to Matt and he hasn't mounted the F5 switch yet he also told me that when he plugged the cable into the switch it seemed loose. He is going to double check that connection in the morning. He is celebrating a friends birthday this evening

One other thing it had been raining there and he has had the windshield wipers on maybe that had something to do with it also.

Our connector fits very tight on the the J3 connector. We have had it happen before where after uninstalling an old chip and installing our chip it picked up very tiny traces of silcone left behind from the cleaning on the first chip. I would still check for any silicone left from the last install. I am not saying that is the problem. We need for you to check every possiblity.

Okay this helps. There will be an issue with intermitten starts and no starts also if he has no start in position 0 and the switch cable is loose. It is made to come off easily so you don't break it when you remove it, but if it is too loose we need to replace it.

Jim this is what Jody says is most likely the the problem.

Thanks. I've always suspected this, but never thought to ask. I guess that makes the whole loose chip thing a little more scary.

After receiving more info from Jim's post, Jody thinks he has it narrowed down. But asking for traces to be double checked is the first thing we ask when there is an intermitten issue going on. I don't suspect his chip is loose but rather the issue with the cable being loose maybe.

Matt,

If you have any questions send us an email. We answer emails over the weekends. If you have anymore ?'s don't hesitate to shoot us an email. Gotta luv Iphone....

I know, but since this won't be the last time a loose chip possibility comes up here, I thought it would be a good time to ask since I had your attention. Thanks for the info.

Yes!! Unfortunately.. that can and will happen from time to time. Must take every precaution to ensure it doesn't happen.
