caliper/rotor replacement

The shop I used recently checked my brakes cause they were squealing. Told me calipers were locking up on front wheels so then told me I need new calipers, rotors, flex lines and brake pads...$632. They were going to get parts from ford dearlership. I have a friend that told me he would do it for me for far cheaper at his home but my question is should I buy the parts from ford or are the parts at autozone or advanced just as as good as the oem? Only 50,644 miles and having to do this already.

Brake pads: if you don't like all the dust, there are better choices than OEM.

Rotors: if you're talking 2wd, results have been mixed at best. Some folks have done fine with non-OEM parts. Others will never buy anything but OEM again after poor results. If you want drilled/slotted rotors, you're looking at aftermarket.

I haven't seen much discussion about the quality of calipers or flex lines.

Thanks. After reading about the Power Stop Cross drilled and slotted rotors I kinda want to try these, they dont cost much more than a pair at autozone and apparently they are better than regular rotors. Anybody have a set?

I just did mine a few weeks ago and used Napa Ultra Priemium rotors and Adaptive One pads. I love them so far. I have towed with them and have no brake dust. Just another one to look at.

I changed my '04 2WD rotors at 83K with the NAPA Performance rotors which are drilled and slotted. Also, made in the USA. I used Wagner ThermoQuiet ceramic pads. I did not need calipers but flushed my entire brake system to refresh the fluid. The rear pads I replaced at about 40k. By the way the rotors are the same as Raybestos brand and cost about $245/each plus tax.

Something doesn't sound right. Why do you need to replace everything from the steel lines outwards? Are the rotors scored badly? Are the caliper pistons stuck? Are the calipers not sliding? Are the lines cracked? I would suggest that you get another mechanic to look at the brakes.

your right i probably should have another shop look at it. one of the seals on the right front caliper piston was torn so i guess that was causing the thing to stick. I did myself notice an unusual amount of heat coming from both of my front tires. The shop said both calipers were sticking and both rotors were warped and they need to be replaced. I am going to have a second opinion before I order any parts. Thanks for everyones information.
