86 4 speed 6.9 tach sensor tests ok.....no tach?

hey guys, I pulled out the tach sensor and tested the ohms, It tested 2500 ohms which from reading here should be ok?

Anything else to check? Im gonna pull the cluster and check that, anything inline i can check etc?

thanks alot, would really like to get it working!~

I have seen just unplugging the cluster, then reinstalling the plug fix that problem.

can't get this tach working......it does nothing ever, no movement. I pulled the cluster and unplugged the plug and plugged it back in........nothing.

There is no wires etc, going to the tach on the back of the cluster? is this right?

any other ideas??

thanks.

Also, no cruise........any ideas where to look/start at?

The wires are in the stock cluster wiring harness if you had the connector for the tach pickup out by the IP.

Is the insulation shrinking back from where the wires enter the sensor?

If so, oil and water could have gortten into the sensor killing it internally.

the insulation is cracked a bit at the sensor yes. I read that if the sensor tests between 2500 and 3000 ohms, that it was ok. Is that the case or not necessarily?

Would it be possible to somehow mimic the tach sending unit? One wire im guessing has power, the other reads the gear teeth? Could a guy mimic that somehow?

Any ideas as far as the cruise goes, I checked the under dash fuse and it's ok.

thanks in advance dave!

Ford still has the tach sensors, the part number just came up in a post that I saw here today, cost around 60 dollars.

If the insulation has shrunk back from the sensor, water is getting inside and shorting it out.

Ford only part and about $60 or so, E5TZ-17B384-A TACH SENSOR
