New F100 owner in the UK
Hi everyone,
I am from the UK and have recently become the new owner of a 1966 F100 styleside. When searching for information on these trucks, this forum kept coming up so I thought I would come and say hi.
My truck is a V8 (I think 360) with what is believed to be it's original engine, except one of the heads may have been changed. If I have understood the 'Reading Casting No's' thread correctly the replacement is from a '64 engine (it had C4AE on it, the other C6AE).
The only history I know of at the moment is that it came to the UK from Deland, Florida in 2004 and was previously owned since 1978. It has Kooters Harley Davidson on the doors with what I think is a California number, 981 1340. I would love to know whether this is original or at least from it's early life, it looks well worn.
I have a few problems to sort out before it'll pass an MOT (I believe what you guys call Annual Inspection) but nothing major. Can anyone recommend any other parts suppliers, I have found Dennis Carpenter and MAC's.
I have seen some great trucks on here and look forward to joining in some of the discussions. I will post some pics when I get a chance.
Chris

Welcome aboard from across the ocean. Your truck originally would have had a 352 V8. Hard to tell on the phone# unless therre is an area code with it. Maybe one of our readers will remember that Harley shop. As far as the casting #, C4AE just means it was first used in 64 so that head is probably off of a passenger car as the trucks had Y-blocks through the 64 model year, no big deal. You're off to a good start on suppliers, Blue Oval Truck Parts is another good one. Good luck.

Welcome aboard Chris, jhooch is correct, while the FE was first used in trucks in 1965, they were first introduced in 1958 in cars. I don't have the time this morning to check but I suspect both heads are equal in flow, just different year made.
Put photos in your CP garage and you can refer to them again when needed.

1965/67 F100/350: The only available V8 was the 352 2V.
360/390's were introduced in F100/350's in 1968.
The C4AE head was used in 1964/65 full sized Ford Passenger Cars with 352 and 390 engines, 1965/66 F100/350's with 352's (1966's w/o T/E = smog pump).
The problem with Ford heads is...some will have different casting numbers for the exact same head.
You cannot go by head or block casting numbers to ID what year the parts fit, what they are for, what size the engine is.
The same heads were used in cars/trucks. ALL the 352/360/390/410 & 428 blocks were cast as 352's.
Casting numbers cannot be cross referenced to actual Ford part numbers.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Where was your truck sold new? It can be pinned down to a certain area by posting the VIN, and the DSO code found on the Warranty Plate.
The 5th digit of the VIN is the assembly plant, the DSO code refers to the FoMoCo District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.
Example: F10DR639XXX: R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant // DSO 71 = Los Angeles (SoCal) Ford District Sales Office.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
US phone numbers are preceded by specific three numbered area codes, so without the area code, it's impossible to know if 981-1340 is from CA, TX or wherever.
I do know that this number is much newer than the truck, because back then, the first two numbers would have been letters.
So instead of 981-1340, the number could have read like this: WT1-1340. When the phone companies did away with the letters, they used the corresponding numbers instead.
I have a longtime pal who collects old (1978), older (1939) and ancient (1915) Harley's. I'll give him a call and see if he recognizes the name.

Hi guys and thanks for the replies.
You have probably guessed that I am new to the Ford truck world and seem to have some of my info either mixed up or wrong. I have a Chiltons manual which has some info about the VIN, engine and trans codes etc but there does seem to be some inconsistencies. I also read somewhere on the net, that the 360 and 390 were options from '65 or '66. I can't remember where at the moment but I will try and find it so you can check it out.
The VIN on my truck is - F10YE831918 and the DSO code is 17.
I have found the numbers on the engine block under the oil filter; F10 and W1. I haven't been able to see the ones (if any) behind the starter, I guess I need to take it out to see.
I should have probably added that the doors have Cal. before the number, I assumed this was CA?
Any info gratefully received
Thanks, Chris

1965/66 390 Passenger Cars = LTD/Galaxie (as an option) / T-Bird & Mercury (standard equipment) only. No F100/350's...at all.
No 360's were installed in any Passenger Cars.
I can't remember where at the moment but I will try and find it so you can check it out.
Don't bother.

Casting numbers on FE (and most other Ford engines) blocks will not tell you anything!
Since all 352/360/390/410 & 428's were cast as 352's, any number you find will be worthless for ID'ing what the engine is.

Y = 352 2V
E = Mahwah NJ Assembly Plant
831918 = 1966, assembled in March 1966.
17 = Washington D.C. Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.
1965/67 F100/350 = The ONLY V8 available was the 352 2V.
The 360 & 390 engines were not available in F100/350's until model year 1968, which began in September 1967.
1965: The VIN engine code for a 352 is D
1966/67: The VIN engine code for a 352 is a Y
1968/76 F100/350: The VIN engine code for a 360 is a Y
California = CA. Cal might pertain to the ICC = Interstate Commerce Commission which regulates trucking.
Commercial vehicles like Big Rigs, for example will have Cal followed by a specific number on the doors, or in the general area.
FTE has members in the 1961/66 forum that are in the trucking industry...so they are more familiar with this Cal and the numbers and what they refer to.
btw: I bought a 1965 F100 brand new..and still own it today. I bought it "off the lot" and it came a 352 and overdrive.
If a 390 engine was available, I would have bought a truck that had one.
Since I was Ford partsman from 1962 thru 1997, if a 360 or 390 engine was available in 1965/67 F100/350's, I certainly would have known about it!

Thanks for the info NumberDummy, I was just going to post again to say I had found the VIN decoder on the site but thanks for the additional info on build date, engines etc.
Is there any way I can confirm it does have its original engine? I guess it's not that important, I'd just like to know.
It's always good to hear of people keeping their vehicles from new, are their any pictures on here?
I guess you would know about it

Here are some pics of my truck, they're the best ones I have at the moment but I will post more when I have some better ones.
... Ok, well there would be if they would display. I will work on this.... Have I done something wrong? I have 'inserted image' and pasted the URL from my photo album.
