Which would you pick?
I am looking at F150's. There are a couple that interest me and the list price is about the same for both. Here they are:
2005 Supercab FX4 4x4 Flareside cloth seats buckets with console and floor shift. It appears to be in great shape. 31013 miles
2006 Supercab XLT 4x4 Styleside cloth seats split bench with column shift. It also has a color matched fiberglass topper with side opening doors. 27676 miles.
Both have 5.4L Triton V8s.
Is there enough improvement between the '05 and '06 to make it worth looking at the newer trucks? Is the FX package really worth that much more in a used truck?

I like the fx4 but I never liked the flareside on these trucks or really any truck for that matter. They are both nice trucks though. The fx4 has a few things that are different then the xlt. Shocks, skid plate, gears, probably bigger rims, and can come with the center shifter. I like the center shifter in my truck.

2006+ trucks historically have way fewer problems than a 2005 model
most FX4 trucks are only 1 step (leather) below a barebones Lariat as part of the standard FX4 package....whereas most XLT's have to be purchased with all of the extra goodies...and most people just don't spend the money
The FX4 is a better all around box straight out of the box. 5.4 standard, 3.73 gears, tow package standard, Limited Slip
if both trucks are comparable in the equipped parts and price is similar, I'd get the FX4.

Tylus,
What issues might the '05 have that the '06 may not? Do they tend to be costly problems or just PITA type problems?
Thanks for all the comments guys. It sounds like I should be looking for an FX4. My youngest son has an '04 FX4 scab and really likes it, but he hasn't had it long enough to know what problems might occur. My eldest son has an '04 screw with just about everything you can get for options. He is also happy with it, but has only had it for a few months as well.
To be honest, I have really liked the Ranger, but the boss (aka wife) wants a bigger camper than the Scamp we tow with the Ranger. I also miss having a real back seat. The Ranger scab is, in reality, still a two person vehicle. Also the mileage on my '07 4.0L Rangers Sport scab is not all that impressive. I have managed to break 20 mpg with it a few times, but 18-19 is more normal. Even though the Scamp only weighs about 1000 pounds, mileage drops to 15 or so when towing (not that good in hilly areas). I know the F150 will be lower, but not enough to outweigh the advantages of a full sized truck.

this is a list of possibilities. Many trucks never experience these issues...but they do occur. and it happens 99% of the time on a 04/05 truck.
most are just annoyances IMO.
so please, for anybody who reads this list, don't go all Chicken Little on your truck. The 04/05's are great trucks. And odds are, if the problem existed, it has already been fixed.
I wouldn't let these issues stop me from a purchase. I'd just be extra careful to identify said problem if exists.

1. Ford had an entire line of faulty injectors that were used. Most 2005's in date range are automatically covered voluntarily by Ford if this occurs. sorry, don't remember the dates applicable. if the injector fails, it usually floods the cylinder and causes the motor to Hydrolock
2. Bad batch of brake rotors. affected 04's and early 05's. trucks just ate rotors until Ford replaced with another spec'd rotor.
3. 3rd Brake-light leaking. Gasket shrinks and leaks water down back wall of cab. Easy fix with RTV.
4. IWE Solenoid failure. Actually affects all 04-08's...but more prevalent in the 04-05's. In 2006 a new IWE Solenoid was used that seems to work for the most part. Still occurs sporatically though.
5. Limited Slip Chatter. Not enough Friction Modifier from factory...or the LS wasn't installed properly.
6. Cam Phaser. Drivers side has a oiling issue. After awhile, the Cam Phasers get loud and cause motor to sound like a Diesel.
7. E-Brake sticking. grease + dirt + corrosion causes e-brake to stick if you don't use it regularly.
8. Butyl Pad. idiotic placement of a Aluminum pad on the rear fender. Traps moisture and subsequently causes bed to rust through.
9. Driveshaft Clunk. Material issue in the 2-piece driveshaft. Greasing hides the noise, but it requires replacement to fix.
10. Wheel Vibrations. Some of the 04/05's are Hyper-Freakin' sensitive to wheel imbalance. You should read some of the older posts about this. Not fun.
