Alt. question

Can anyone tell me or better yet provide a picture of how an alternator is suppossed to be mounted on a 302 without power steering or smog pump. I have eliminated both of these items from my 86 motor and dont know the best route to find the correct bracket or brackets for the job. Thanks

The alternator should have it's own bracket and belt tensioner. I believe they are mounted tot he right side of the engine.

There should be no impact from your removing the other items except possibly a smaller belt, and the balance pulley with three tines will only be using one now.

I though the 302 alternator was run by it's own belt (balance pulley to water pump to alternator, back to pulley) but I could be wrong.

I cannot use the Alt brackt on original 86 engine as there would be no provision for the water pump as the water pump belt originally was tensioned off the smog pump and the way the bracket for alt/smog pump is setup I cannot just run a belt from Alt to waterpump down to crankshaft. I know that not all 302 used power steering, I need to know if a 302 is a 302 know matter what year, are all water pumps and holes for accec. the same???

There is a guy on ebay that sells bolt kits/brackets etc for 302's. He could probably source what you need (just search for '302 bolt kit').
Alternatively you could go with a custom bracket from someone like march performance.

This is one of those answers that you're just not really wanting to get but need to hear anyway. Over the course of its 34 year production run, the 302 had at least 5 water pumps that I'm aware of and they were designed to mate with at least 4 different timing covers and 4 different harmonic dampers all depending on what year and model car it was installed in. For instance, there were at least 3 different configurations in 1986 alone: truck, Panther chassis, and Fox chassis. That doesn't even get you to the brackets and pulleys! I'd bet that were at least a dozen different accessory arrangements. The point here is that playing the mix and match game is a sure way to drive yourself completely nuts. For your purposes, the best thing you can do is comb the salvage yards for a vehicle with the configuration you need and remove the brackets, pulleys, water pump, damper, and timing cover from the same car. This is one of the few things that I hate about Ford. They should have picked a nice, compact arrangement and stuck with it!

Went to the local speedshop today and they tried to sell me a 300 plus setup, they laughed when I told them I had set asid approx. 20 dollars for the brackets. Needless today they could not have shown me the door quick enough. I was hoping not to have to put it looks like I will have to fabricate something. Just at this point trying to get it all fired up this weekend. Thanks for the responses

The guys at the Jose Rodriguez Shopo de Speedo on Boulevard Revelucion in Tijuana would have shown you the door if you told them you expected to buy alternator brackets for $20!

Here is a company that makes specialized brackets. I have one on my custome built (shortened) one wire chrome alternator for the 390. Wasn't $20, but if you get stuck at least you can look or call to see if such a thing is even made.

And yes that's really their name:

Thanks, but I will never get that stuck, I am not building a rod here, just trying to put an old truck on the road and use it. Catchy name though
