Auxiliary fuel tanks

I'm thinking about getting a auxiliary fuel tank for my F450. One that goes in the bed of the truck. I do not want one that comes up as high as the top rail on it. I have heard a lot of you guys talk about the transfer flow tanks. Do the 98 gallon tanks come as high as the top of the bed? I was also looking at the tanks made by American tank. It look like those are not as high. Does anyone have a tank made by American tank?

I have an American tank, it is the wedge 90 gallon tank. But mine is mounted on an aftermarket Hauler style bed. The problem with my American tank is it is unable to read the tank level from the factory fuel gauge. Seems beginning in 08 Ford changed the manner in which the CPU reads fuel tank level to some kind of a pulse system for input. The CPU program is not compatable with the sensors on the American Tank. I currently use my Scan Gauge and program in the fuel tank size and have the Scan Gauge to monitor the Miles to Empty of that tank. While this does give me a good reading as to Miles to empty and gallons remaining it creates one problem that just drives me crazy. Since the Ford CPU can only read the Ford on board tank, which is an 18 gallon tank. My truck sounds off the 50 miles to empty, then 25 miles to empty, then 0 miles to empty alarm and info center message, even though in the real world I may still have 1,100 miles to empty in the Amerian aftermarket tank.
American tank says they are working on a solution, but yet to date no fix.
From what I have read Transfer flow does not experiance this problem.

OH, and to answer your original question, most in the bed tanks will measure right at 19 inches, give or tank an inch. Which is just a hair under the top of the side rail of the truck bed. One thing you need to watch is where the tank manufacture located the tank sending unit. If it is mounted on the very top of the tank it may increase the overall height to be a couple of inches higher than the side rail top.
I hope I have been of some assitance with my two post.

Check these tanks out: http://www.titanfueltanks.com/

Replaces you stock tank, 67 gals. No need for gauges or senders. Takes no bed space

I have an transfer flow accross the bed 98 gal. tank and have had it for about 5yrs. . It works great, is compatible with my '08 fuel guage, and is totally automatic. It does show you fuel levels in the stock tank and gives you the amount in gals. for both tanks, and fits below the bed side height if you want to put a cover on it. It is about the size of a typical tool box, but not as tall. I like it and it makes my life easier. Do you have a diesel or gas engine?, you may have compatibility issues on all tanks with the gas engine.

I bought my aux tank from: http://attatank.com/atta/index.html . They're in Mansfield, TX, and build their own. I've been happy with my tank. It's built to fit under a hard roll top bed cover. But, they make all styles.
