Volare steering box

I just bought Borgeson joints and shafting for my truck. I assume I need to drive the pin out that I see on the Volare box end of the shaft? Any do's and dont's? Dunka.

Are you talking about a pin in the Borgeson joint or the steering box? I have never seen a pin in the shaft of a Volare steering box.

I was hoping you or Sam would see that post, Chuck. It appears to me that there is a drift pin holding the Chrysler vibration dampner to the 5/8" splined shaft exiting the box toward the u-joint. If there's no pin, how do I remove the steering shaft/u-joint assembly? (on the box end)

There should be a pinch bolt of some kind, to hold that on. I would doubt Chrysler would use any kind of a drift pin, to attach it on to the stub out of the box. This is just speculation, I could be wrong. When I got my clip the steering collum was already removed.

there is a drift pin holding the dampner onto the shaft.. I didn't know that when I did mine, and ended up cutting it off with a 4in cutoff wheel.

based on where it is, I recommend bracing the dampner against something as you work the pin else you will be pounding against the upper shaft bearing.

and it will only come out ONE WAY.. the slot is tapered.

I went ahead and pulled the steering column out to re-paint and noticed that the plastic bearing in the bottom of the column is worn out to where I have side to side play at the base of the steering shaft. This is a 79 F-150 tilt column. I wonder if that bearing is available at NAPA or some well stocked parts house???

Well, I finished my steering job. Pulled the column out, painted it,replaced the bearing in the bottom and packed with grease, removed the 30 year old, worn out Chrysler vibe dampner, shaft and single u-joint and replaced with new borgeson needle bearing u-joints (2) and shaft. WOW! What a difference! Steering response is terrific, no play in the wheel, and s-m-o-o-t-h...

Good idea, Chuck. Gotta get to bed now, but i'll snap a couple tommorrow nite. I got the plain steel ones and was going to paint them, but they look so nice, I just clear coated them and installed. nite nite.
