swamp coolers

I had several people ask how the "swamp-cooler" that I had on my 56 at the show in Pigeon Forge on Friday worked. I had to say I didn't know if it worked well because I had never fixed a small hole in the bottom so I could put water in it.Yesterday I epoxied the hole and filled it with water. I took it for a drive and found that it does work well enough that the air coming in through the unit is cooler than the air that comes in through the vent windows. Thanks

I have a couple of old evaporative (swamp) coolers which fit in the door window, and they work great around here, except that they do not have electric fans and do not work when stopped or in traffic. Since our average humidity is under 20%, they work as well as refrigeration AC. In fact, we use swamp coolers on our house, office building, and garage building.

I have heard that swamp coolers work better in less humid conditions.I had an older co-worker that spent some time in Arizona in the early fifties. He says that swamp-coolers were very common in the area where he lived. There are reproductions available now.I like having it on my truck just for the novelty of it and to make people wonder what it is.Thanks

I considered getting one for mine, but even the broken and rusty ones seem to be made of gold now a days.
