1984 Ford Diesel...Ranger?
#16
YES! I remember now, the BMW engine was supposedly a 2.4L displacement (was thinking 3.4 but knew that was wrong) with some ~130 Hp. Hard to imagine that much power in a diesel ranger. But again, since I never saw one, I don't know if its true.
I also heard of a ford LTD being offered with the mercedes 3L turbo diesel (inline 5) roughly around 1985.
Would be really neat to see all these old diesel conversion experiments if there was a source for the info, but they seem to have all just vanished.
I heard that 4wd was an option for the diesel rangers, but the only ones I ever saw so far were long box regular cab 2wds. The ranger we have is 4x4 extra cab with canopy and rack but it moves just fine It originally came with the 2.9 EFI V6 and its honestly hard to tell them apart dispite a significant horsepower advantage to the original gasser.
I'm guessing the diesel puts out 90-100 Hp right now with the newer head and roller cam. Starts running out of steam past 70 MPH, but it will pass 85 under the right conditions.

Just because a vehicle is rare does not make them valuable. The vehicle has to have a market for people who want to pay the price.
$10,000 for a 80s Lincoln with close to 200,000 miles is not a good price. He'll be sitting on that for a very long time at that price.
BTW - they made a little over 1,500 S/C Ramblers

I was just supprised to see one that still exists. I thought they would have all rusted away by now. 2.4L turbocharged inline 6 cyl diesel.....I can think of turning up the fuel screw already LOL Would make a great touring/road trip car.
Must be a lot smoother than the 2.3L mitsubishi TD. The 2.3 shakes a little at idle and rumbles the drivetrain at low RPMs.
If I were in the market for a car like that, I would consider the price, but it would have to be basically perfect and I don't think this one is. Besides, I don't need a car, I need a truck.

I stand corrected, 1512 total production run.
The one here in town is one of 500 produced with the white side with red and blue stripe paint scheme.

You really dreaded steep hills !
As for the 3.9: my wife got me a Diesel Mag subscription for X mas and in this months issue they had one of those in a Ranger.

Aweeee, come on. Nobody writing English papers here.
Anyways, I had a couple rabbit trucks but they never felt like trucks. More like a car with a bed. The diesel ranger still feels like a truck. Sure, they are underpowered but they have enough power to get around and do small jobs. They are an absolute joy to own and drive. If you get one, I'd suggest leaving it alone, aside from perhaps an exhaust. The second you start to screw with things is when it goes down hill. Leave it alone and you wont need to buy expensive/rare parts.

X2...........
Anyway back to the diesel rangers.... My buddy had two that sat out in the weeds for years, both 1983's. about a year ago he drug em both out. one had a supposedly good running motor and junk body, the other had a very hard starting motor and a decent body... so he did what we all would do. swap good motor in the decent body. Now he has a good running 1983 ford ranger with a 2.2 perkins diesel 5 speed. They both had 4 speeds, but he found a 5 speed from a mazda and swapped it in. Now it doesnt scream so bad at 60. I think he averages 28 to 33mpg. Now he just has to do body work.
On a side note, he took it to a dyno place and dyno'd it out at 54 horse with the pump turned up.... lol. the guys down there thought it was so funny they charged half price

I'm an intruder, I dont own a ford, and probably never will. Here is the deal though i am a nut for these little 4d55 diesel's. I have been messing with them for quite some time, and found lots of tricks. I would like to help any owners of them, and I also have a ton of parts to sell. They say they are only 86 hp, but they came in several trims. Some have wastegates and bov's, older one's did not. They came with different boost settings as well depending on the rig. 4door Monteros were 18 psi, 2door was 14 psi that kind of stuff. The tc05h turbo most likely came with a 9a or 10a compressor. The later 2.5 models came with td04 turbos. These are the ones to get. The tco5h interchanges on the hot side with all tdo5h turbos. My truck ran a little tdo5h 16g turbo with fatter injectors, the secondary fuel enrichment collar removed and lowered, and a big ebay intercooler. Got my 3900lb 4x4 excab truck to 124mph and will powerbrake both 31x11.5 swampers. Interested yet? These are not hard to find parts for, just look for the Montero or Pajaro parts. 4d56 parts are usually upgrades. Your 4d55 will do anything a 4d56 will, it just takes a few extra lbs of boost. I run my truck at 30psi and it does wear it out in about 100k. She has 245k on it now no head gasket yet or any cracked heads, lots of blow by though. I have three motors that I want to sell, including my whole other two trucks 2wd and 4wd. I want to sail my boat to the south pacific and need money for that instead plus its just to much crap in the yard. I also have a 4m40t with tranny and tcase, thats the mechanical injected as well its 4cyl 150hp 325ftlbtq caterpillar uses them so you know they are good carlhunguss@hotmail.com
There, I cleaned it up a little bit.
BTW Carl, your not allowed to sell anything in this forum. This post is probably ok, but any discussion of prices has to take place in a private message or email. Also, welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
