Here you go.. the GT40 heads are identified by 3 vertical bars on the end as well as GT cast into the corners. The P heads have 4 vertical bars and GTP cast into the corners.

here's a question,
i've been told that heads from a 302 will fit a 351W, and that GT-40 heads would be a big inprovement to my stock 78 heads(conanski), but the valves look like they're the same as in the pic, if someone did a GT-40 swap on my motor how would i tell?

You can't tell by looking at the pic but the GT40 heads have slightly larger valves and the ports flow significantly better. Combined with the smaller combustion chambers these heads would produce big power increases on a smog motor as long as the cam, intake, and exhaust are also upgraded, these parts were also restrictive on these motors.
To put 302 heads on a 351 the head bolt holes(in the head not the block) have to be drilled out to 1/2". That's it.

An '86 mustang motor will have E6 heads, so every head in the chart above except for the '79-'84 302 heads will be an improvement. The best performing heads are the GT40P, you just can't use equal length shorty headers with them and they will require 90 deg plug boots.

Conanski - What kind of header setup would you need to put GTP heads on a 78 F150 with a 351W?

some of the ford explorer 302 heads have 1/2" holes in the heads already, a buddy of mine found this out when he put a set on his carbed 351. dont know when or why they started doing that.

The P heads will work with longtubes.. any longtubes, just need plug wires with 90 degree plug boots.

Thank you , just bought a low mile 99 mountaineer that had been wrecked , but it started with a turn of the key . May look at the heads for my next rebuild or engine swap .

no problem. i have a wrecked 97 explorer 5.0 myself i need to swap the V8 into my 96 explorer. except it has 230,000 miles on the motor/tranny/t-case with no rebuilds of anything..it runs/drives well but i'm going to rebuild it all before i go thru with that.
