Rear Axle Flange Gaskets

The LMC and Carpenter catalogs do not show rear axle flange gaskets (1951 F1). Does anyone know where they are available? Also, should there be a gasket between the front brakes backing plate and spindle?

There is no gasket between the front brake backing plate and the spindle, it's just metal to metal. Now on the rear I don't know if there is a gasket or not because it should have a sealed bearing and a regular axle seal inside the axle housing itself. I assume you are using the original Dana 44 differential? Just FYI the 57 up Ford 9 inch differentials use the same rear brake backing plate and bearing size as the Dana 44s we have in our trucks, so you could just get rear axle flange gaskets for a 57 Ford 1/2 ton pickup that would work. I'm sure others will chime in soon and give you some more advice.

On a 44, I didn't find gaskets available locally, so I just got a chunk of gasket stock from the autoparts store and made my own.

Perhaps this drawing might help. If not I have tons of these in my gallery "Salesmans Handbook Scans" Check it out:

NUmber Dummy Bill will be able to tell you the correct updated part numbers and perhaps even where to find the parts you seek!

Good luck!

Does anyone use RTV on the cardboard gasket that is OEM? Is it just a dry fit when replacing the axle flange on the rear? I am never sure where to use the silicone or not. Steve

Some guys believe in liberally smearing silicone or RTV all over everything, everywhere, every time. I believe quite the opposite. If the mating surfaces are CLEAN and TRUE, I never use the stuff. The gasket is there to do the sealing and it doesn't need any help. If it leaks with a new gasket, then it wasn't clean, wasn't true, or it was over/undertorqued. RTV does come in handy if your mating surfaces are pitted (like an aluminum water outlet often is) or if no gasket is being used (like a differential cover). Your mileage may vary!

Yes there is a gasket at the rear backing plates. I got mine at the local NAPA. Whenever I buy something like that I buy a full set of extras, you never know how long they'll be available. They were dirt cheap.
