Fuel filter questions

Where do you guys (and girls) have your fuel filters, before or after the fuel pump?

Was using the old truck today to haul branches that I cut off a tree. It started as normal, I backed it up to load the branches and kept it running. It stalled off and I thought it was because it had not warmed up enough and didn;t have enough choke. But it would not start, thought I flooded it, tried pushing it, then tried jumping it. Then pushed it back into the driveway and let it set and did other yard work. Later jump started it, let it idle and warmup, and as I pulled out I stalled it. It wouldn't start, son and I tried pushing it to no avail, so we pushed it into the driveway again and attached the battery charger. Did more yard work, then tried to start it later and it started. Drove to the place where I was disposing the branches and about a mile away it stalled. Was able to get it off the road and popped the hood. One guy pulls over to help and asks how long has the fuel filter been on? He says I should put a new one on and go from there.

Advance Auto is open till 9:00 (it was now about 7:00). hook it up and truck pops right off. Go to dump the branches and truck stalls off. I am close enough to drag branches to the pile. Because I had to attach a rubber line between the fuel pump and filter the steel gas line is against the cross over pipe. I told my son that might cause some vapor lock. I am thinking that I was able to drive about a mile and the pipe heated up and caused vapor lock. So my son and I cut the one hose shorter and used good old binder twine to pull the line away from the cross over pipe. I made it home but it did cut out some times.

So: #1: where do you have your fuel filter, before or after the pump,

and #2: is the current problem vapor lock or is there dirt in the line?

Thanks, and BTW I had a great day and got lots of work done!

Glass Bowl Paper Cartridge Fuel Filter

What fuel filter does the truck have, and where is it mounted?

1952/64's had the fuel filter element inside a glass bowl mounted on the fuel pump.

Originally the filter element was ceramic, could be removed and cleaned with solvent.

In 1963, Ford replaced the ceramic fuel filter element with a corrogated paper cartridge fuel filter element.

C3TZ9365A .. Fuel Filter Element-Corrogated Paper (Motorcraft FG16) / Obsolete

ED BENNETT FORD PARTS in Lebanon PA has 1 = 717-272-8762.

BOB ALLEN FORD in Overland Park KS has 17 = 800-676-0675.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 23 = 800-543-4959.

MILLER OBSOLETE PARTS in Binghamton NY has 17 = 800-546-7278.

FREESE MOTORS in Monticello IA has 8 = 319-465-3541.

How about plumbing a large filter between the tank and pump, then run the small filter after the pump? Throw spares in the glove box along with some rubber line and clamps.

^ ^ In-line fuel filter.

Ford offered a universal type that is similar: C2RZ-9155-A (Motorcraft FG2).

Autoparts stores sell a "see thru" version.

On Bonus Built trucks the fuel line is the low point of the whole system, stuff settles out there. If the lines themselves are plugged, a filter won't make any difference. Mine were packed solid with fine rust particles, I couldn't even blow them out with compressed air. After I got them off the truck, I banged on them with a hammer and hit them on the ground. About a 1/4 pound of @#$%^ came out. I just replaced them all with new epoxy-lined brake line. Also cleaned and coated the gas tank. Haven't had any fuel issues since. I run both an inlet and outlet filter on an electric pump.

Some people like to see the gas in their filters; I prefer a metal can that won't crack. Some gas blends weaken some plastics.

he filter was attached directly to the carb side of the fuel pump with a threaded nipple. It was a metal filter with a nipple for a hose on the other end. The parts guy said he never saw one like that and I wasn't surprised. I had to get a threaded nipple to attach to a hose to come off the pump, then hook up the filter and then a hose to the fuel line to the carb. The filter is by Puralator and is a plastic see through type.

thanks!

I have two mounted.

As Ross mentioned I have a cannister (the 1 1/2 inch barrel type) inline between the tank and the fuel pump laying on it's side and dipped down an inch to allow water and particulates to settle. I change this every 3 months/3K mi at oil changes.

I have and independent glass bowl type filter between the fuel pump and carb. I remove the filter element on this one and change it annually.

I'm surprised too...but for the opposite reason.

The parts guy never saw a filter like that before? Really? He musta been born after 1980, or hasn't been in the partsbiz too long!

Maybe he never saw one mounted on the fuel pump...but I have.

It's not original to that location, but...it's the exact same filter that threads directly onto the carb used on 1965 and later 1V, 2V and most 4V's when there's no filter inside the fuel pump:

D3AZ-9155-C .. Fuel Filter (Motorcraft FG14C) / Fits: GAZILLIONS of 1965/79 2V/4V carbs, and on gazillions more 1V carbs / D3AZ-9155-C replaced C5UZ-9155-A).

The factory filters are steel, some of the aftermarket types are clear. The type used on some HiPo 4V's (C7OZ-9155-A - Motorcraft FG19) has a larger thread size.
