School me on transmissions for the 05 and up!

I'm looking to buy an 05 and up.
1. What auto trans do they have and were there any changes?
2. What manual trans is in them.

I would perfer a 3V V10 with a manual but unless I order it, it is tough to find. My price range is used. Had a 7.3 with the 6 speed ZF6, is this still the same manual trans used from 2000 to 2009, in 5.4, 6.8, 7.3, 6.0, 6.4? I've heard the torqshift is a good trans, again is it the same trans for all 05 and up gas and diesel.

I don't tow regually, however the main reason for a heavy duty truck is that I will be lifting it with 37's (and will regear 4.88's?). Will an auto last with big tires?

I did try seaching but couldn't find the info I wanted, so thanks for any input.

The V10s still come with the 6spd manual like you had in your 7.3l. The 5R110 (Torqshift) is the auto for the 05'up 3V. Its a stout trans that many here really like.

Finding a V10 truck is hard enough, but finding a V10 with a 6spd and a decent set of options is darn near impossible.

What he said is right on.

And welcome to the forums.

Okay, don't quote me on this, but I think the diesel ZF-6 and the V10 ZF-6 aren't actually the same animal. The gasser needs a stronger low gear. I.e., I dont' think the two transmissions are identical....

Basically, my question is if I drive an 05-09 5.4 auto or manual will it drive the same as the V10 with same trans, except less power. When I build a truck on ford's website (I'm still looking for used) there is a different auto trans for gas and diesel, is it really different?

There is only one auto trans for all Superdutys F250-F550, with any engine. All of them are the TorqShifts.

Well, given that diesels rev at about half the rpm's as gassers, surely there's a difference between a TorqShift for gas vs diesel?

Only in PCM tuning.

The 4R100 was slightly different depending on 5.4, V10 or diesel (an extra clutch somewhere, and a different clutch drum).

No idea about the 5R110, but the PCM tuning (shift points, etc) is certainly different between the engines.

Thanks, I think that answers my question. I wanted to know so, if for example I test drive an 08 5.4 auto, and I like it, then I can jump on a 05 V10 that comes up for sale. I don't want to take a long drive and find out I don't like the way it drives. Also sounds like all 05+ models are good, none to stay away from.

I just am a little cautious about auto, again I would prefer the manual, but trying to be realistic. Thanks all.

There was a very early run of the TorqShift trannies that had a bad snap ring or something that would grenade the tranny. That's the only thing I can think of.

What dates was this early run, or how can I identify it.
Thanks that is exactly the info I'm looking for.

According to Ford, the bad snap ring was installed from Job #1 on Diesel and Gas engine trucks thru 1/12/05 for Diesel and 1/14/05 for Gas engine equipped trucks.

I had the snap ring replaced early on because I have the snow plow prep. Truck was in the shop for a day (free of charge of course) and they replaced the snap ring. Never had a problem with it...although I only have 29k miles on it...but it has done a good 2/3 of those miles towing.
