Old is beautiful
I know our trucks are old but this old timer has us beat. This is Angel Oak in Charleston, SC. Estimated between 1400-1500 years old. Canopy span is approx 160 feet. The circumference is 25 feet. Hurricane Hugo damaged it pretty bad but it seems to be recovering ok. I can only imagine all the hurricanes and other weather it has endured. If anyone ever visits Charleston, SC it is worth seeing.

Old Oaks like like your picture are prized by wooden boat builders for the wooden knees that attach the hull to the deck. They have the same advantage as a good metal forging, grain runs with the curves.
After Katrina I know that one museum, Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut established the rights to several Live Oaks that were damaged beyond saving. Mystic Seaport has an active large restoration facility for old wooden ships.
I have an active interest in wooden boats and I volunteer in a smaller boatshop at the Maine Maritime Museum one day a week. Recently I have been cutting oak members out of 3" thick X 16 feet long with the bark still on the edges. We got the planks from a sawmill that provided oak for the restoration of the Bounty, the replica that was built for the movie Mutiny on the Bounty years ago. Oak is strong, some are very rot resistent and can be readily steam bent.
Sorry about my ramble definitely off topic.

It's been a long time since I was in Florida but I do remember a Kapok tree at a hotel we ate at the was huge like this oak tree and if I remember corectly it was 150 years old thenand it's truck size was 12 feet diameter,it had huge red flower blossoms that could be seen for miles. It's really nice to see these plants survive the sawyer.
