your leak

Hey i'm not a mechanic but i had the same trouble with my truck 97 expo 4X4
Remove the drain plug from under transmission housing (black in color about 3 inch round) check to see by having a trusted driver lightly tap starter to the point you can see the drain plug on the coverter is still there, if so add oil start truck dont drive. if it leaks from that drain plug hole chances are the seal blew, check your lines see if there lose or cracked just to be sure.
If the front seal blew just dont kid yourself thinking seal went bad, nope ,oil pump, bushing something else caused to blow! , trust me it cost me 700.00 for trying to save $$ if your in new york 5 boro area i know a good trans shop for about 1300 installed they rebuild your transmission good luck, hey i hope i'm wrong and it turns out to be something simple, but have someone that know really check things out

thanks for the reply. could it be caused by being in 4x4? or if it could have leaked because of overheating?

When you say being in 4x4 do you mean driving highway speeds in 4x4 or towing uphill in 4x4 and trans overheating?i say yes, both could have caused something to blow but it goes back to other seals or bands in or around trans oil pump or valve body that could have cause main seal to blow, some times replacing front seal works but ,like me i paid double for messing around rather than just have a shop check it out,you can always remove it then take it to a shop to rebuild

give a few places calls be ready for(O you need to bring truck in ) ask a few places maybe someone can give you an idea as to what could have happened but if you were on the beach in 4x4 high i think you should have been fine as long as you were not trying any dukes of hazard jumps or stunts(LOL ) good luck but check around
