Parts for rebuilding a V10?

Hello, I have a V10 which I am replacing. I have looked and I am having a hard time finding any rebuilding parts for my old engine. I would like oversized pistons (forged if possible) and some undersize crankshaft bearings because I will need to get the crankshaft turned (that is if I can find a machine shop here in Western KY which can turn such a funky crankshaft). I will also need 2 connecting rods since #9 and #10 rod bearings spun to the point that the engine locked up tight.

Would anyone here on the forum happen to have these parts in good condition or a shortblock which was messed up due to a dropped sparkplug?

No, I still have not given up on the possibility of installing a 2006 engine into my 2000 truck. Still considering all my options.

Please help!

I would think it cheaper/easier to buy a low mile used V10 out of a wrecked truck and stick it in? Unless you just like to rebuilt motors then?? have you searched the internet for V10 rebuild kits?

I have searched th internet for kits but have not found any. I did find that Northern Parts sells parts but the parts come to $1250.00 not including the 2 connecting rods. Then I would need to pay the machine shop close to $500.00 for the machine work. That would be a low ball estimate considering 10 cylinders being bored, turning a rather unique crankshaft, upgrade the sparkplug holes, magnafluxing the heads and block......... The list goes on, if you want to do it right. Really not worth all that. I have been told that no one makes forged pistons for the engine.

I have searched the internet for a used low mileage motor but everything I have seen has close to if not over 100K miles on it. That and they want what I can get a complete 05 or 06 engine for it. Thus my being interested in just swapping in a 05 or 06 motor.

Do you or any of you guys on here know of a low mileage 2000 to 2004 engine which is available?

Thanks for the reply, Andy

4.6L, 5.4L and 6.8L (V10) are mod motors (modular). This means most of the parts are interchangable. All three engines share the same pistons. 5.4L and 6.8L share the same rods. So you will use the pistons out of a 4.6l and the rods out of a 5.4L. You can get forged pistons and H-beam rods for your V10. I'm building a V10 now to handle some boost. I got some diamond forged pistons with coated tops and skirts for $880. Good luck on your part search.

Awsome, Thanks. Since you are looking towards what I am interested in doing with the V10 I removed from my truck with the boost and all. Plan on putting it twin turbo charged into a 74 Maverick I have a couple of questions.

If the original PCM is not used since this engine is distributorless how will spark be accomplished?

What trannies will fit on the back of it other than the truck trannies? Since this is a modular motor will a tranny used on a 4.6 or 5.4 work? Even better would be a non computer controlled tranny. I was going to finish up the car with a TT 460 and C6 with a transbrake but since this V10 came about I am thinking out my options.

Thanks, Hoping to hear back from you, Andy

Nicebenz68:

Any transmission will fit on the V10 as long as it came off of a mod motor. Think of the V10 as a 5.4L with two extra cylinders. You should be able to put a stick shift in it if you wanted to. The mod motors first showed up in 91' town cars. I would start there and see if any of them came with AOD tranny's. These tranny's are pretty much like a 700R4, you can put them in almost anything.

As for the distributer, you can drive it off a belt if need be. Here where I work we have a 5.4L with a distributer. It's mounted where the water pump should be and is driven off of the crank shaft with a belt. To get a better idea of how it looks the cap laying on it's side and pointing towards the front of the car.

The only problem with this statement is that the pistons and rods would have to match the weight of the stock components due to the use of balance shafts in these motors.

Thanks for that great Ebay aution info.

Thanks for the tranny info too. Is there any non computerized automatic transmission or an automatic transmission? The Maverick is a street and strip (mostly strip) car so I would prefer an automatic, possibly a powerglide or maybe since it would be street drive at times an OD tranny, just not the huge tranny behind these V10's in trucks.

The distributor idea probably would work on a 5.4 but going to a V10 that really is not likely to be an option.

Has anyone on the forum boosted a V10? If so, can you please email me pics and specs at blaisa@hotmail.com ?

Thanks all for all the great ideas and in formation.

i think you may be in luck. a quick search of autozone typing in 1991 and 1992 lincoln town car says that both of them used the aod tranny behind the 4.6 modular. also, the 92 only crown vic used this. good info for me too. hope this helps too. matt

I have engine (347 stroker) and TCI Super Street Fighter transmission built and the car but have not put it together as of yet. Too busy building my house, shop and working on my other projects for now. I was going to install a SBC like most 944 V8 swaps but the Ford 302 is a narrower engine and will fit so much better not to mention it is a Ford!
