New Taxes on the Internet
One for us 19 for them.....Here comes the TAXMAN again! Check out the following: www.free-market.net/rd/57439636html
This is a two page article out of the Washington Post. Very credible and even more scary. These tax hungry states will never give it up. They are like a feeding Dinosaur, never to be satisfied.
I sure hope those of us that have had enough can prevent this from happening by letting Congress know that we have to extend the ban on Internet taxes to be permanent! Otherwise, FTE will be collecting and distributing tax revenue for all 50 states. Now that is scary, FTE working for the TAXMAN.
What is your reaction to this tax scheme.

You just know the states are salivating over this 'lost' revenue, but how many online retailers would be put out of business if they lost the edge they maintain by not having to charge tax?
Further, yes, the states are losing the tax but the delivery companies, i.e. UPS, USPS, et al, are reaping the rewards via the
delivery fees - do you think they might balk at this if online sales fell due to the business lost by the online sellers?
Bottom line, I'd stop buying online if sales tax was added to my online purchases. Often the price is right on the item but the shipping and (lack of) sales tax offset themselves so I come out ahead; the addition of the sales tax would make most transactions online less desirable to me.

My opinion?
It's bullcrap, every last bit of it.
The internet is a world market, and unless and until there is a global regulatory comission - which implies that the entire goods producing planet can all agree on something at the same time - it should be a free market.
If individual states or countries begin taxing it, then production and sales can be expected to base themselves in those countries or regions where there are no taxes in order to maximise profits.
And guess who gets hurt?
Once again the carpet-baggers have a new idea! Geez, here we go again...

Wolf: I agree that it is low down but yesterday (11-13-02), the participating states in this meeting, came to a concensus to try and find a way to implement this idea. I hope they go down in flames, but I just wanted the forum to be up to speed on what is taking place while we all
