Wooden steering wheel on the Bonus Built site

Quite some time ago on the now defunct Bonus Built site one of the members posted pictures of a steering wheel he made by removing the plastic from his stock wheel and covering it with different types of wood to give it a different appearance. It was a lot of work and looked pretty cool. I thought I saved pictures of the wheel but now I can't find them if I did.

I am hoping that either the member of the BB board is also a member here and would repost the pictures or maybe someone here remembers who it was and let me know who it was.

There reason I'm asking is because there was a post on the HAMB a while back from a guy who was making his own banjo type steering wheel using the hub from the stock steering in his old Ford. It was a very cool post except he used fiberglass to cover the outer ring of the steering wheel. I hate fiberglass, I've worked with a lot of fiberglass and I just can't see using the itchy c**p for a steering wheel. I thought if you combined the best from both ideas you would come up with a really awesome custom steering wheel.

Bob,
I think I recal the pics you are talking about.........but thats about as far as my memory goes. I don't recall who had posted them.

I have been toying with this idea for awhile. Since I have a late model steering column I was thinking I could use a late model hub and fab a banjo style wheel. I had several different ideas for the outer ring. Either buy a premade ring of the right diameter, borrow a friends roller and make a ring. Weld together numerous short pieces of flat bar and then cut off all the corners, etc

The flat bar method would lend itself well to being covered with wood using the same process of numerous short straight pieces then going back and rounding off all the corners.

Maybe someday.....Its not one of the things that is high priority on my list of things to get done.

I can't wait to see what you come up with
Bobby

After seeing the post on the HAMB about the banjo steering wheel I got to thinking I might like one in my panel. The stock wheel isn't too bad but it has the normal cracks that will have to be repaired. I have another stock wheel that's in fairly bad shape that I could butcher up to make work.

Here's the HAMB link:

Technical **TECH** How to make a banjo steering wheel! - THE H.A.M.B.

It doesn't look too hard to do but I would use stainless rods and wood for the out ring. Bobby with your fab skills and ingenuity you could pop one of these out in a weekend.

Thanks Bob, but I'm afraid you confidence in my fab skills are overated. I've seen the pieces that you have created for your truck.......I think it won't be long before that snappy red panel is sporting a new steering wheel.

I just went and pulled up the HAMB thread....very cool! Man, there's alot of talent in this world.

Tom, That's the one! Is that your wheel or did you just happen to save it?

I really like it, especially the inlay in the outer ring and the different wood in the hub.

I'm thinking of something like this:
