door latch/lock question

i have a 51 f1 with the door lock cylinders. i recently discovered that there is a differenc in the latch from the doors with the exterior cylinders and the ones with out. unfortunately this was after i destroyed mine thinking that i had 2 really good ones already (they were not the cylinder type). i now need to source a pair of latch assemblies. does anyone know where to start looking?
the other question is- can these set ups be converted into using an electriclock and unlock function? i know this has been asked but i cant locate answers. thanks!

I don't really understand what it is exactly that you need.

Well, I'd start looking on e-bay for the latches. As far as I know all years (48-52) had locks on the passenger side, and they are not too hard to find. BUT the lock on th edrivers side was an "Extra Cab" option and came in two varieties - with provision for the outside lock and not. The one with the provisions for the lock are getting tough to find.

A lot of these latches were discarded because the spring used to set teh inside handle in th elock position would break and hter was no replacement. But one member here has found a spring that is compatible and I think a couple folks are repairing their old sets. You might want to PM "51Panelman" (Ilya). He has some that were broke and he was in on the discussion about the discussion about the springs.

I'm not sure about the electro lock. Since the doors lock differently from the inside as opposed to the outside, I would say no, but as soon as I do that someone will come by and say, "Julie you idiot, I did it."

So, I'm not sure on that.

E-bay and Ilya!

PS Edit note: Speak of the Devil, we must have been typing at the same time! Ilya, if I read this correctly, it sounds like he needs a drivers side latch with the outside lock provision.

I like the way that sounds! Maybe I should change my name to iLya (get it???)

Unfortunately, I don't believe that I have any spare door lock mechanisms with the lock provision.

At this piont, eBay would be the place to start looking.

Here's a set on e-bay if you don't have any at all - but the drivers sdie doesn't have the lock provision:

eBay Motors: 1948 49 50 51 52 FORD FLATHEAD / DOOR LATCH MECHANISM (item 220359351628 end time Feb-16-09 20:19:22 PST)

I haven't seen a set with the drivers side lock for about 4 months. If one pops up, I'd expect to pay over $100 for the first auction that comes up. Just my opinion.

Also, next time someone posts a thread about some road trip they've taken with pictures of carcases, yo might want to ask them where they are and if they got the owners info. Maybe someone haqs one sitting in a rust bucket somewhere.

Early Ford Store (earlyfordstore.com) has NOS (new old stock) door latches and lock cylinders in their display cases.

This is one of the few remaining obsolete parts stores in SoCA, and is located in San Dimas in the original 1916 building that housed the Ford dealer.

I bought, for a friend, a NOS left side door latch there for a 1953/55 (BAAA-8121813-A) for 75 bucks, far less than what others are charging, and this is a genuine Ford original, not a reproduction made in Asia.

There's a couple more lefts and rights, same price.

Besides 10's of 1000's of NOS obsolete, used and repro parts, this place is a virtual museum, and is certainly worth a trip for y'all that live in the area...or not.

Need any mouldings? There are 1000's, some are new, some are used and most of them are for 1940/60 cars & trucks.

There are dozens of NOS steering shaft and worms, almost impossible to find today.
