1989 F250 460 Starting problems- Need help!
I have been having problems with my truck starting and running easily. I will need to explain. In the morning when I go to start my truck to warm it up, when it is cold, ( 35 deg. or lower) the truck fires right up and i have no problems. As the day goes on, or even once the truck is warmed up, if I try starting it again after turning it off, It will crank/ turnover about 5-6 times then fire up, but unless I keep my foot on the pedal it dies immediately. I start it again, and it does the same thing. I turn the key a third time and it fires up, idles a little rough then smoothes out and I am fine. Once it does stay running, my exhaust smells like I am pouring gas straight through my tailpipe. Yesterday I put new plugs and wires on, allmotorcraft. I still have the problem. Should I put on a new dist.? What steps should I take to figure this out. The engine only has 113xxx miles. Oh, the engine is EFI. <!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig -->

I am not an EFI expert but it sounds like either the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is bad or the Fuel Pressure Regulator is bad.
It may be helpful to pull any stored error codes. Click on "Tech Info" in the blue banner across the top of this forum page and then click on OBD1 for instructions on pulling codes with a paperclip. You can also visit the repair section of autozone.com for information on how to test the ECT.
If all that tests good you will then, I would think, have to put a fuel pressure gauge on to check that. Hope this helps.
