2002 5.4 no start
Hey guys,
Usually hang out in the 6.0 diesel and Superduty forums. Need some help from the 1/2 ton crowd.
Got a buddy at work that runs an 02 F-150 5.4. Apparently, drove it last Friday night, sat the weekend, came out for work Monday morning, cranks but no start. Not sure if it's fuel or spark related.
Loaned him my SCT X3 to take home, figured we'd start by pulling codes and see where to go from there. So he calls me tonight; the only code he pulls is a P1000 (I already know what that one is). So I'm thinking there should be something in there, it's either not getting fuel or spark, shouldn't it show a code for cylinder mis-fire, lean or rich mixture, not enough injector pressure, something?
Is there a possibility that the PCM has gone bad, and can he just grab one from a similar model year with the same motor at the boneyard and swap them out (or borrow one at least to test it)?
Any other ideas on where to start looking, or is a trip to the dealer inevitable?
Thanks, Jim

No, PCM's are vin specific. They need to be programmed for recognition by other modules in the vehicle or they won't work. check fuel pressure(try banging on the tank). Also watch the THEFT light, is it flashing fast when you turn the key to run? Could be a PATS fault or key lost it's program. Use a spark tester and check for spark(I think i bought mine at sears).

Crank No Start Checks
Verify PATS prove-out first to eliminate that, if possible.
Very CEL/SES/MIL works during bulb prove-out (shows PCM is getting power).
Listen for fuel pump prime during prove-out. If it does, check fuel pressure with gauge.
Crack throttle 1/4 way while cranking to see if you have a stuck IAC valve.
Check fuses F23, F24, and F30 under the food.
That will get you in the ball park for 3/4 of the common reasons for a crank /no start condition on your truck.
There's more, but try to eliminate those first.
