81 F100 flywheel questions
I have a 81 F100 that someone before me had put a 72 model 302 in. It has always had a vibration in the engine and through out the truck. I figured I had the wrong harmonic balancer so I pulled it off and checked it. The casting #'s on the block are D20E-6015-AB 3021. The casting #'s on the balancer are C9TE 6316 A1 which in talking with damper dudes told me that is the correct balancer for that 302 block. In talking with someone else they told me Ford changed the balance on the 302's around 80 or 81. My question is could I have the wrong flywheel since it is for a 81 and not a 72 causing my vibration? The casting #'s on my flywheel are E1TE-AA. Should I have a 72 model flywheel to make this match and possibly correct the vibration I have? This truck has the 3 speed with overdrive transmission which I believe is the Clark-4 Speed O.D. Original motor was the 255 V8.

Yes, that could be the problem. It's a little fuzzy as to the exact date when they changed the balance, so I would take the flywheel to a machine shop that might be able to tell you what you have, or just order a older flywheel to make sure you get far enough away from the early 80's date, and compare them to see if the balance looks different. I think some well equipped shops can actually rebalance it to the old spec.
If it vibrated just sitting in the driveway and not moving, I would say that is probably the problem.

That is exactly what is wrong with your truck...the casting on the flywheel indicates an 81...81 is the year Ford changed the balance on the 302 flywheel it went from a 28 ounce imbalance to a 50 ounce imbalance..a 351w has the same flywheel as a pre 81 302..it maintains a 28 oz imbalance during its existance..the weight is cast into the back of the flywheel itself....if you turn it over and have a solid area about 4 inches left out in the machine cut, you have the wrong flywheel..the 28 is smaller about 2 1/2..the 300-6 has a nuetral balance with zero weight left in it-so watch that one ,as it will throw you off with its small block bolt pattern..and you got me on the 255, lol. if you find out let me know. Get you a flywheel and that thing will be smooth as butter....Good Luck.
