Rarity of '79 F-350 4X4 XLT Ranger?

Ok so I found a cherry '78 shortbox 4x4 in the north country and was hoping to find another deal to ship two at once. I was looking online and found a BLUE '79 F-350 4X4 XLT Ranger that a family that was moving wanted to sell. Thought it was pretty neat but the fella said his wife had been mud running in it . Her dad bought it new. They put a 460 in for more juice and had it repainted a few years back. Asking price was $2500. I got busy and decided I had enough trucks for the month. Well I just saw it on Ebay with a day left and a bid of $6400. There was another '79 F-350 4X4 Ranger XLT on Ebay that had a VIN that started F26 and the seller was posting questions that he was getting. Several individuals posted statements that he had a F-250 with F-350 Badges and that a true '79 F-350 4X4 XLT Ranger is very rare. What do you guys think? Yeah I still should have bought it. Oh Well.

Yeah pretty rare, as you said check the vin to verify.

If it's in reasonable shape, for $2500 buck's I would hope that it was an automatic because I think that I'd break my arm trying to get the check book out fast enough!

Very rare truck. I recently bought one off of Craigs List in Kansas City MO.

I paid 300 cash for the truck with no motor and no bed also the int was mostly gone.

All of the drive train was still in tact as well as the suspension.

PARTS PARTS MUST HAVE MORE PARTS!

Oh and if that truck was what they claimed... I would have chartered a jet to jump out of just to get there to pay for it.

I seen one go for 13k and it was stock. but very very clean and only 78k miles. 1 owner truck. I hate auctions sometimes.

The first three digits of the VIN is the Series Code.

1973/79: F26 = F250 4WD Regular or Crew Cab Pickup / F28 = F250 4WD Cab & Chassis.

1974/79: X26 = F250 4WD Super Cab / X28 = F250 4WD Super Cab-Cab & Chassis.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1979 only:

F36 = F350 4WD Regular or Crew Cab Pickup.

F38 = F350 4WD Cab & Chassis

X36 = F350 4WD Super Cab Pickup.

X38 = F350 4WD Super Cab-Cab & Chassis.

78f-250lariat,

I see you have a set of DC-1's on your truck and I'm planning to mount a set to on mine. Could you send me some more pics? What size rim and tire?

Thanks

If your talking about that one in Lewiston Id I'd be leary of that seller. I personally bought a 79 F-350 SC from him and he told me that it was a D60 front. Instead of getting pictures I trusted his "knowledge" and when the truck got here it was a D44HD. He is in my opinion very misleading with his auctions.

Also just because that second truck your talking about has F26 on the door does not mean that it is not an F-350. It could be an F-350 chassis and body with a door or cab change at some point. Best way to check VIN info is to go with the frame stamping. It is way to easy to change a door VIN tag.

Interesting. Though I have never had a CC I would of thought that they used a different VIN prefix than the regular F26/F36. I had to check my books to confirm and could not find a different listing for a CC VIN.

Here is a picture of a chrome DC-1 on my Bronco with 35" Cepek's. They are the 16 x 10.

Bill had that right unless you were correcting someone else. I was just more shocked to see a CC uses the F26/F36 start to the VIN number.

1974/79: X26 = F250 4WD Super Cab / X28 = F250 4WD Super Cab-Cab & Chassis.

I gotta ask though, do you think the DC's are a comparable rim to Alcoas? I mean the Alcoas are just about as strong a rim as you can get, and they've never failed me on my other rigs...but if you say/think they're just as strong, it would be kinda nice to go to something different than just the 8 hole look.

I only know Alcoa'a on my semi, not a pickup truck model rim. I know they are the king with class 8 trucks so I think it would be safe to presume that as well in the smaller truck class. I did not want the round hole "everyone has those rims" (already got 'em on the 250) on my Bronco and wanted chrome instead of aluminum. The DC-1 is not available in a 15" chrome (only aluminum or black) so that is why I stepped up to a 16" rim.

Yeah, I know the guy selling it on Ebay is a sheister. I copied and pasted the original add for the truck and saved it to a word file. I would post it but I don't think I am supposed to. The idiot on ebay has a bid of $7600 now, I really wish I would have bought it for that $2,500 in October.

good idea 78F-250Lariat about not posting the link to the classified here. you're not supposed to do that. some people have been warned about this, and some have been banned for short times for doing this.

as for the VIN thing, that is weird that Ford would have done the same thing for regular and crew cabs.

This jazz was typed VERBUTUM from the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog.

There is no specific Series Code for a Crew Cab. Same as a Regular Cab.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a good thing this pertains to 1973 and later, because the 1964/72 truck parts catalog makes NO mention of Crew Cabs at all!

There's no VIN decodes specifically for Crew Cabs, and not ONE specific Crew Cab part is listed in this catalog.

Very odd. Ford was smart enough to designate an F10/14/15 for 1/2 ton differences, F25/26 for a 3/4 ton and X whatever for a supercab but they did not change the CC VIN to anything different. What were they thinking

ok let me get this straight.

F10 = F100 2wd
F14 = ? F100 4wd ?
F15 = ? F150 2wd ?

if these are right then what is the code for F150 4wd?

Yes, F14 is a 2wd F150, not 4wd.

I wasn't trying to point out all the differences with a 1/2 ton specific VIN. I was more trying to point out the fact that I think Ford screwed up when they setup the VIN for a CC. Maybe someone who has an original CC can post up the start of there VIN.

Truck brought $7600. That sheister made a pretty good profit for a detail job and a set of shiny wheels. The Vin did read F36 on this pickup. Anyways was there a special VIN for CC's that is Cab and Chassis only?
